Whereabout are you? A 4 and a half hour block only happens from stage 3.

wrong.

City of Jo'burg gets 4h30min even on stage 1, or at least in the areas I move around in.

with the difference being

on stage one- 2-3times a week @ 4h30
stage two - 1-2 times a day a few days a week
stage three - 2-3 times a day, every day, sometimes 2 consecutive sessions.
no stage 4

WTF... Geez, that is crazy for JHB.

In the Cape is is only 2.5h, regardless of the stage... The shedding is just more often as the stage increases.

At least 2.5h is fine to keep your fridge cold... but 4.5h is super long. Wonder why they went for 4.5h?

Apparently they "consulted" with "stakeholders" who decided that a single 4 hour outage was less disruptive than 2 2 hour outages.

Must have been a great little consultation. The catering must have been fantastic.

The one place I prefer the 4.5 hrs as opposed to your 2hrs, is on stage 2. On stage 2 we're not on the schedule for more than 3 days running, followed by 2 or 3 days off schedule(lights on) then again either 2 or 3 days on schedule for no lights.
And there are 2 pvt hospitals and 2 govt(1 really a day hospital/clinic) ones(area group is rather large) on the same grid, so speculation that areas with hospitals don't get LS are wrong.

On mon I was on schedule for both stage 1 and 2.
Tues not on schedule
Wed not on schedule
Thurs stage 2 only
Fri both stage 1 and 2 on schedule.
Then next week all a bit more frequent.
Stage 1 every second day.
Stage 2 for 3 days running, 2 day break, then stage 2 again

But some days we're skipped coz we're on the day time schedule, and LS is only started later.

#^% me.. i'm glad im in/part of PTA. 4.5hrs is ridiculous.. makes me wonder if its due to population density, areas being huge or 'special' areas are circumvented. like a 2hr schedule is bad already

The problem with 4.5 hrs = the battery capacity needed to ride out the time and more importantly.. if its in the evening, 2.5 hrs = doable to work around dinner prep prior or post but 4.5 hrs = buy or go sleep

areas like randburg and cresta are high density in terms of population and are also hit by 4,5hrs. I actually think they might be on the same schedule, as I think it is all off, when off, though not same schedule as here.

or just buy a gas stove (have a 2 plate high pressure one. adsl on ups, rechargble lights that can run full power for 50hrs(if plugged in they come on as the power goes out), and can also charge cellphone. Laptop has 6hr battery with moderate to heavy use. only problem is that if I'm busy working on someone's PC and the power goes off....

Can watch movies on the laptop. Just cannot use dishwasher, vacuum and such. Else life goes on.

True.. but i pre-cook 3 meals(saves on electricity & time i find as i combine cooking tasks where possible) on a Sunday and heat as needed with a microwave.

I just have a 2kw UPS which can keep my server, adsl +/- led light running for about 4.5 hrs. when I use tv though it cuts down to 1-2hrs depending on modes. Usually its been day time for me, but lately its evening now and then.

Reminds me to get a little gas stove/camping one.

I haven't had power all day. I think that group 7 deserves a week without load shedding after this!

Wow, I didn't know that it is that bad. In PE stage 1 is listed as 2.5 but normally lasts 2 hours. Stage 2 is 2.5 and stages 3 and 4 are 4.5 at a time.

For pretoria stage 1 2.5 once a day rotating( so for instance have ls on monday but then nothing on tuesday), stage 2 2.5 hours once a day and stage 3 2x2.5 hour blocks a day. It never lasts 2.5 hours for me thought, longest has been 2.1 hours.
