Hi guys, uncapped Fibre, does it work the same as uncapped ADSL, where, because of the amount of people on ADSL, the speeds are so bad (the reason why (sensible) people go for capped line)?

But shouldn't they guarantee a minimum speed with Fibre (capped or uncapped)???

Depends on the fibre provider. Openserve - yes you get exactly the same contention issues. The others - probably not.

Your provider should tell you what sort of contention ratio you will have to deal with.

Thanks guys, I'll look at the capped Fibre options, hopefully with rollover (wishful thinking) months...

Openserve/Telkom you used to get exchange congestion (so links from the exchange to the core network were congested) and you also had IPC congestion, where an ISP would oversell the IPC and so you have a 2nd level of congestion.

With Openserve you still have the possibility of IPC congestion but with all the new MSANs that were built the network shouldn't suffer from congestion any more.

On other networks like Vumatel etc, there is no limit on the handoffs, so it really is only the ISP that would contend your traffic. True uncapped services without FUPs shouldn't have this issue.

On Openserve / Telkom since mid Nov.
Consistently get 90% of line speed.
Much better than adsl... especially during peak times.
Also, FUP limits (based on line speed) are ok.
