Router and iBurst

I have a MSI RG54GS router which is connected to three pcs. The DHCP of the router seems to be working correctly and all three pcs have (dynamic) IP addresses which allow them to see and access each other. I got iBurst today and decided to run it through the router. I connected iBurst to the WAN port and entered my username and password as PPPoE in the router's settings. When trying to access webpages through Internet Explorer, IE only seems to hang. I am able to ping outside addresses which makes me believe it is only a setting in IE which needs to be configured. Any idea what and where it is (I have setup IE to "automatically detect lan settings").

Also, is there any way to make use of the iBurst terminal when running through a router (as the iBurst isn't connected to the usb port).

Thanx all

First thing that comes to mind is DNS resolution problems.

You said you could ping addresses ... is that IP addr. or DNS names?

Hey, thanx for the reply.
I managed to ping DNS addresses (I haven't tried IP yet, but if DNS works ...)
Do any of you know whether I need to set up my router as a proxy (in IE)?
I tried port 8080 but I couldn't connect to it.

Just one more thing that bothers me and which I'd like to ask you about :D
Whenever I connect to iBurst (via USB) a second Local Area Connection pops up with limited/no connectivity. Disabling this connection closes the iBurst connection. What is this and how do I get rid of it (if I can).

Also, could this influence the router problem?
Thanx

Don't know where the Myadsl experts are lately as they will probably know what the problem is.

I have a Linksys WRT54G router and did not have to change anything in IE even though I hardly use IE it does work. I prefer Mozilla FireFox as my main browser.

I can't remember any second local connection popping up when I used the USB port, so maybe you made a new network connection for your iburst via the network port at some stage.

The iburst terminal program only works with a USB connection.

I assume you set your router to autodial for iburst

I still have to try FireFox sometime today, see whether that helps.

I thought it was strange, but seeing as the technician did the setup ...
It's nice having to pay R400 for installation and then stuff like this happens.

autodial = connect on request?
In that case, yes.

In my case with Win XP on USB I have three networks / connections:
[Original] Local Area Connection
Local Area Connection 3
Iburst connection

Using PPPoE I get (If I remember correctly :) ):
[Original] Local Area Connection
Iburst connection

The extra connection with USB appears to be a virtual / pseudo PPPoE connection.

This is part of the USB driver for the iBurst UTD. You cannot get rid of it when working with USB. They create a virtual LAN connection/dialup connection for the purposes of transferring data to/from the UTD. There are better methods of doing this but they chose to do it that way. Rather use the ethernet port with a router and you won't see that again.

Okay, where to start........

Firstly lets tackle your IE problems, if you can ping an address you will probably find that the problem is IE specific. I assume your DHCP settings on the router are correct. Check your TCP/IP settings on the "Local Area connection" and make sure that the default gateway and DNS server point to your router. (1st thing I would check)

Don't use "detect settings" in IE, if your not using a proxy or firewall (besides the default one on the router) just uncheck all the boxes in connection settings and IE will use the default gateway provided in your TCP/IP settings.

You could always try Firefox to see if the problem is related to IE or if it lies elsewhere.

WRT to the "limited connection pop-up" as mentioned you require the loopback connection to use the internet, however a bug in SP2 reports that you have limited or no connectivity, in the general settings tab for the "local area connection 3" (normally 3 for std iburst install) you simply uncheck the box which tells windows to notify you of limited or no connectivity.

Hope this helps!

iBurst and Router

Nooooooooo, I’m going out of my mind!
I still can’t get it to work, I tried with FireFox and everything.
I’ll post a step-by-step description of what I did, so that you guys can tell me where I screwed up. Note this will be quite long, so here goes …

a) Edit TCP/IP settings of Local Area Connection setting:
- IP Address: 192.168.1.82
- Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
- Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254 (Router IP)
- Preferred DNS: 192.168.1.254 (Router IP)

b) Edit Internet settings on Router:
- Connection Type: PPPoE
- Username: xxx
- Password: xxx
- Connect on Demand: Enabled
- Max Idle Time: 5 min
- Service Name: (leave blank)
- Left MAC Clone and Dynamic DNS disabled

c) Edit LAN settings
- Disable MAC internet filter

d) Edit NAT settings
- Left everything as is (disabled)

e) Edit Firewall
- Disable firewall
- WAN to LAN inbound: Pass
- Virtual DMZ: disabled

f) Edit Internet Explorer Settings
- Dial whenever a network connection is not present
- Left everything blank in LAN settings

Here are the last few event logs of the router:
Start service with LAN=192.168.1.0, WAN=196.2.122.49
WAN connection is up
196.2.122.49 assigned by server
Link-Create OK

This is what I get when I ping after I changed these settings:
Pinging www.l.google.com [66.249.85.104] with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Reply from 66.249.85.104: bytes=32 time=621ms TTL=234
Reply from 66.249.85.104: bytes=32 time=620ms TTL=234

Even here it is clear something isn’t completely right. Trying to access google from Internet Explorer gives me “Website found. Waiting for reply…” and from FireFox “Waiting for website…”

I’ve tried having windows automatically configure my TCP/IP as well as numerous other configurations in the Router, but nothing seems to help.

Any ideas :( :( :(

What happens when you try to connect to a base station in the router config setup?

Does it connect and get an IP, Submask, Gateway and DNS or won't it connect?

Answer the above line first then I can try help further unless an expert pops up.

Just trying to be helpfull here since nobody else has replied yet.

My router setup is laidout differently with different wording but maybe we can figure out the problem.

Do you have DHCP enabled in local settings?

Section a) in windows network should be set to:

Obtain IP automatically, same for DNS and Gateway

Try pinging: ping -t 196.30.31.100 -l 1
and see what results you get.

Strange enough I can't find a connect/disconnect function in my router setup, but when connecting the iBurst to my router the internet status changes from disconnected to:

Connection Status: Connected
Connection Type: PPPoE
WAN IP Address: 196.2.120.xxx
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway: 196.30.31.101
Primary DNS: 196.30.31.193
Secondary DNS: 196.46.70.1
WAN MAC Address: 00-0C-76-A9-98-62
DDNS: Disabled

So yeah, it connects and retrieves all of that.

From that info it looks like it's working, but when you post that info xxx out the last digits so nobody else can see your IP

Try that ping setting I posted and let it run a min or so then see what the average ms is.

Damn connection dropped me as I was about to post this reply

I tried using "obtain IP automatically", but to no avail.

I tried the ping, stopped it after about 50 packets and got this summary:

Ping statistics for 196.30.31.100:
Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 50, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 56ms, Maximum = 162ms, Average = 75ms

How can I specify my MTU for the router without limiting my normal network connections to that MTU?

There should be a MTU setting in the router setup, at least mine has that option, have a look in the router config setup.

First check that MTU URL I posted as that worked well for me.

That ping test you ran looks ok as average is under 100ms.

Going by that you are indeed connected, but does IE still fail to load?
