Hiya

Wonder if anyone will know!

I managed to get a routerboard 230, but the guy I got it from doesnt know the username and password. Tried Winbox and ssh with no luck!

Been reading that I need to reinstall the software. Dont have a PCI graphics card or null modem cable, been trying to get it to boot from ethernet with "cntrl + E" with no luck.

Any idea's, so i need to go out + buy a null serial cable and PCI graphics card?

Thx!

You dont need any kind of graphics card. Just a standard null modem or ups serial cable will do the trick. You need to download the netinstall program from the http://www.mikrotik.com download section as well as the latest version of Mikrotik for the x86. Then just follow the directions in the install manual. It is fairly straightforward.

if etherboot is not enabled in the boards bios it won't boot from lan, only option is to get a null modem cable or cf card reader

Thx for the replies guys!

ups serial cable will do the trick

Any chance of elaboration? I have lots of these lying around but they're male + female so you obviously cant plug them into your serial port...

Thanks so much - been batting with this the entire weekend!

Routrboard 230 should come pre-installed. Plug a serial cable into it and login as admin and no password

Na it does come preinstalled. Thing is the guy i got it from put a password on, and the last time he used it was over a year ago and does not remember the password anymore!

Will go look for a null modem cable. Tried 2 x usual serial cable that comes with modems with an extender but no luck. Hyperterminal does not do anything!

So you rekon a null serial cable is the way to go?

Hiya Guys!

Still a bit stock, got myself a null modem cable and plugged em in!

Hyperterminal doesnt do anything, select com port, 9600, none, 1, Hardware...Hyperterminal says connected instantly and thats it. Tried unplugging and then doing it, also connects instantly so Hyperterminal is obviously not connecting at all!

Got the netinstall files etc but cant get it to boot over lan....maybe i do need a pci graphics card so i can configure the bios?

Suggestions?

You can configure the BIOS over the serial cable.

Try different rates on the Serial.
If that doesn't work, find another Serial cable.

Is it possible for the previous user to have disabled the serial port somehow? Wondering that that would be it before I go fiddling with the cable again. just wired it up according the the user manual!

Am i correct in just firing up Hyperterminal, putting in settings and clicking connect?

Thanks so much! :) Im gonna get this right somehow!

It is possible that the Serial port was disabled, but highly unlikely.

Keep trying.
Otherwise, you'll have to get a CF card reader

Thx :) but nope! No luck with 115 000kbps....

Most the manuals specify 9600...also doesnt work! Tried all the speeds actually!

Got hold of a CF reader, pop the CF card in and windows wants to format it as it is not formatted. Arg, so try another PC - same thing. Funny thing is though that the board boots off it and assigns a IP.

Getting really annoying, thinking about just formatting the stoopid card, and buying a new licence. Stuck stuck stuck!

dont format it, just use netinstall util in windows and point it to the cf, if u still struggling u can come to goodwood and i'll do it for u
