That ping though.. Maybe test a cape town server? Mine was 3ms last time I tested

Thanks, yes. Was worried until I manually picked a closer server. 3ms.
ISP thinks I'm in JHB today.

Can't believe this actually happened. Wifi is now slower than internet, well only for some devices behind a wall or two.

Ah ok cool.. Yeah this Fibre is really amazing :) Going to miss it next week (going to parents) :(

Last night I updated all my steam and Xbox games, took me less than 15mins :)

What router are you using for Fibre? I have a Mikrotik installed with no WiFi, I decided to spoil myself for Christmas and buy a Ubiquiti UniFi AC Long Range AP. It works super well :)

Using a Mikrotik RB951G-2HnD. I recently lowered the wifi TX power and forgot to push it back up again, but my work laptop wifi is 144Mbps max and I usually don't get that anyway. I have an ethernet cable from the router downstairs to my "office" upstairs and usually work over that, but I am going to keep that Ubiquiti in mind.

I got the AC version simply because it is the only range with a gigabit LAN port. Seeing as we have 100mb internet, we don't want to be limited on this basic thing. The Ceiling AP looks really good and works really well. I'm busy experimenting some extreme setup settings at the moment. (Too much free time)

Anyway enjoy the fibre.. It is AMAZING. Even used it on VOX Bolt-on (limited to 10mbps) and I could quickly tell it is faster than what my 40mb was. Twitch for instance was much better.

How much installation is required?

I'm renting my apartment, so do I need landlord approval first?

Most probably.. This is not as simple as a "pull cable through".. Just inform the landlord that he doesn't need to pay anything for the installation, and he give you the go ahead.

It'll make his property more valuable :)

14/12/2016: Order placed with ISPAfrika
14/12/2016: Got notice that order has been forwarded to OpenServe. Awaiting them to contact me. Informed lead time is 1 to 3 weeks (So this might bleed into next year)

19/12/2016: Appointment made for 09/01/2017
06/01/2017: ISPAfrika confirms appointment
09/01/2017: THE BIG DAY:
* Openserve technician phones me just after 10 to confirm address.
* He arrives promptly and we discover that the idiots who built Ascot Terraces decided "Who needs pipes lol" and cemented up the Telkom conduits.
* Installation now referred to the Openserve contractor to come snake the pipe or put up trunking.

It was the exact same problem with Ascot Mews. They had to trench it into my flat, couldn't go through the building walls.

Has anyone had fibre installed in The Met yet? Just wondering how smoothly it went.

I applied with Webafrica last Friday (6 Jan). Still waiting on a date for installation.

Similar thing at Sandown Crescent. The appointment was for the 9th. The technician only called me on the morning of the 9th to setup a time, which he was 45minutes late for. And only to tell me a contractor needs to do something; something about a thick pipe carrying a lot of people's cabling and mine needs to be pulled out from there.

Only then can the fibre be run from the point to my place.

I'm surprised that there are more complexes with issues than not. Glad I'm lucky then (Birkdale Village). The manholes were almost empty, only the smaller square hole for the analogue lines is a little messy and old, but still spacious enough. The manhole with the buddy box was just as empty, the biggest issue of the day was the wind blowing everything around.

I'm finally connected. The process really was a thorn in my balls but just because people don't know how to be honest. I thought I'd highlight what I went through so whoever is applying knows what to expect.

  • So in mid December our area was lit and was purple on Telkom's coverage map (telkom.co.za/coverage/)
  • I applied through ISPAfrika for the line as they were the cheapest. They submit the order to Openserve who laid the cable
  • Openserve contacted me about 2 weeks later to setup an appointment for early January.
  • What they didn't tell me was that it was just an on-site inspection; not the actual installing of the fibre. They also told me it's a whole day affair. Which I took leave for.
  • The day before D-day someone was supposed to call me to confirm a time. This did not happen. I just received an email from ISPAfrika confirming if all was good for the agreed date.
  • I get a call ON D-day confirming a time, for which the guy was 45 minutes late.
  • He said a telkom contractor needs to come in and run the fibre to my flat.
  • A week later I get a call from the contractor who wants to come the next day
  • This happens and it was a mission of note - this was due to the setup of my complex. He had to come the following day and sort it out. He said he'll arrange for Telkom to come and install the ONT and complete the installation as well because quite a bit of my time was already wasted.
  • This did not happen so he called a technician and said he'll be at my place at 9am.
  • This too, did not happen. I managed to get the techie's number and he said the job has to first be assigned to him and the contractor shouldn't be making promises.
  • So I head to work and he calls me about 2 hours after that confirming a time. My nanny is home so he gets in and does his thing. I already had my router setup and cable ready for connection to the ONT or Modem.
  • ISPAfrika needed the circuit number so just remember to ask the techie for that. Once I sent that through, it was activated their side.

I get home last night and hook up the new credentials in the router and boom, I get this:
Speedtest100.jpg

I tried Axxess's details as well and I pinged bbc.co.uk. ISPAfrika gave me a consistent 163ms. Axxess was all over the place between 181ms and 210ms. I kept the Axxess account on for downloading and streaming; for gaming I'll use ISPAfrika.

Usenet started off slow but virtually maxed out in the early hours of the morning.
Xbox downloads were also a bit erratic too. Crazy spikes on a Gears of War 4 update (went up to 200mb at times!) but I'll try again with a few other things this weekend.
PSN downloads seemed to only use about a third of my line. Also need to do some homework to see if that can max my line.

If they need to come and install then surely there is no commitment yet? I don't think there is much cancellation required.

Just out of interest for everyone who went through ISPAfrika. Why did almost everyone go through ISPAfrika?

Yeah, you should be able to still cancel. @bighit did this sometime ago. Axxess deducted the R2850 cancellation fee but he managed to get it back as no work was actually done.

It was between Axxess and ISPAfrika for me - A combo from Axxess was R31 p/m more expensive than using ISPAfrika for the line and Axxess for the data.

But Axxess gave me a bigger turnaround time and tbh, so far I've been more impressed with Garth's prompt feedback at ISPAfrika than the answers I received from Axxess.
