So my line at ISPAfrika is amazing, support, installation and everything was pretty good too.

Random question though... Did anyone ever test the super small cap we get from ISPAfrika? I have like a 10GB account with my 100mb fibre and tested it over the weekend. I barely got to 20mb down :crylaugh:

Not the end of the world, I get my cap somewhere else

Yeah I did. I got full line speed on it. Decent international pings too. I cancelled my Axxess 200gb * 2 account though. I went with Crystal Web's 150gb account mainly because it's only capped from 6pm to midnight. Since last week, I've used 178gb but only 68 was my actual cap :)

Their premium news server is decent but only getting 2-3mb speed. Not bad for a freebie I suppose.

Did you notice any shaping at night? Afrihost's "Potentially Shaping" is so bad.

I'm on live chat at the moment with CW and they tell me nntp and p2p is shaped during peak hours. My stuff was at 4am so they're busy investigating at the moment.

ISPs will never admit that they shape/throttle

Well in CW's defense they did tell me that they shape during peak hours only. On the same chat they outright said that they don't throttle, though my nntp speed says otherwise. Having said that though, nntp traffic - whether on a local news server or international is still bound to the rules set by your ISP, right? They could throttle at a lower level so it doesn't matter if you're on local or international. Or am I totally wrong?

Because I got full speed on Newhosting news server.

I think you are confused between shaping and throttling.

Shaping is specific ports and protocols, in this case NNTP (Possibly specific ports but not sure). If they shape a protocol, your speed will be much slower while everything else on the same line may be normal speed (like FTP).

Throttling is just slow speed of everything, not protocol specific.

Ah, yes I was confusing the two. Cheers, buddy.

So after emailing them back and forth for most of yesterday I figured it out. They assured me everything is fine on their side and my account is setup correctly. I tried 2 different downloading tools and both yielded the same results on CW's news server and an international one.

Another MyBB user is also on a 100mb line with CW as an isp and he gets full speed on nntp traffic.

I eventually tried increasing the connection count from 10 in increments of 10 and lo and behold my speed jumped in increments of 3MB/s. I tried taking it to 30 connections and got 9MB/s. I reduced it and it dropped accordingly. So I set it to 50 and I'm now getting 10MB/s.

I reported that back to them and they said they suggest keeping it at 10 else I might experience disconnects. Lolz.

Finally have my line up & running in The Met, with WebAfrica. It's awesome!

Installation didn't go as smoothly as I would've liked - OpenServe couldn't find a way to run fibre through the existing conduits. I'm not sure whether they were blocked with cement as some other complexes, or whether they just couldn't trace where the conduits ran.

Timeline as follows:

06 Jan -
Contacted WA & completed forms.
Took roughly 2 weeks to be contacted by OpenServe to arrange installation.
31 Jan - OpenServe came out, and determined they'd need access to the flat below me, as they were having trouble with existing wires in the conduit.
02 Feb - Made arrangements with my neighbour for OpenServe to gain access. Turns out my conduits didn't run through the flat below me. OpenServe said they'd need to run a new (exterior) conduit from the fibre box to my flat.
02 Feb - Contacted managing agents for permission to do this. They were incredibly **** at their job, and took 2 weeks to get back to me.
15 Feb - Once permission was received, OpenServe returned within a few days. They ran a conduit from the corner of my apartment block (where the fibre box is located) to the outside of my flat. I wasn't present for this part of the installation, which was good, as it took the better part of a day.
16 Feb - OpenServe returned to finish everything off - ran the last few metres of conduit, drilled into my flat, sealed up the hole, mounted the box, and tested the line. This took a few hours.
20 Feb - Received my free router from WebAfrica (via courier).

I know this is an old thread and unrelated to the installs.... but does anyone on this forum have an Openserve fibre link (regardless of ISP)?
Reason for my question is I’m trying to find out if it’s just my fibre line that’s down at the moment, or if there’s a general fault in the area.

I'm with Telkom (20mbps uncapped) via Openserve, and my internet is working fine.

Well that's BS then... I have been down since Monday and still no idea what the fault is or what is going on.
I've gone from a 100Mbps line to 0 and work from home.
LTE is expensive yo!

Anyone have any contacts I can try reach out to, to help?

What have you actually done since monday?
Did you check the status lights on the ONT?
Did you try connect with a free account from another isp?
Did you log a fault?
