Online driver's licence renewal launched — with one catch

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has launched its online system to enable South Africans to renew their vehicle registration and pay without leaving their homes.

According to RTMC chief executive officer Makhosini Msibi, the online payment system will also apply to driver's licence card renewals.

So effectively we can pay for it online, but still have to deal with the bollocks at the licensing places anyway...
Yeah, its an online payment system, not an online renewal system..

The CEO even uses those words himself

I went to an optometrist, took my results to the licencing centre and they made me do an eye test anyway.

Don't waste your time.

Yup, same thing for me when I renewed 5 years ago. Epic fail.

This is useless. Fingerprints haven't changed in 5 years, that's the point of using fingerprints. So I can do an eye test at an optometrist and I can pay online, but I still have to go in to take the same fingerprints again? For what?

My next renewal is only due in 2-3 years so hopefully by then they will have either extended the validity period to 10 years or figured out a better system. I don't want to have to leave my house to renew.

Yes.

I have been to a station in Durban a few years ago. 6 Hours to do the renewal, another 2 hours waiting to pay, but then they closed and sent everyone home. Came back the following morning, waited 5 hours in line and eventually paid. So, this could, effectively cut the period shorter by 5 hours. UNLESS, of course, if you still need to queue in the payments line to present them with the proof of payment, then the online system is a waste of time.

Seems like a day wasted just with extra steps now.

“Alternatively, if you have gone to the optometrist, then you will still need to come in because we still need your finger,” he said."
Tsek he's not getting any fingers from me.........

Yes, really don't get the "you have to go in for your fingerprints". They have it already. What is going to change.

I think the reason is that they still need to retain jobs. Even if they are just sitting their picking their noses and make you wait in line for hours. Never going to change.

Did my licence renewal in Kdump on Friday...booked...printed and completed forms...copy of ID....eye test done...Still took over 3 hrs...You just bounce from one queue to the next....

I saw yesterday they shut the place as there was no water...And they didnt bother to tell the people waiting outside...thats as common as a chicken crapping...

Having to deal with any government institution has become a horrible nightmare in South Africa. Service delivery has collapsed in total, hence the reason you need to queue for many, many hours, sometimes many days just to get a simple thing done, which should normall take no longer than 15 minutes. Would never have happened pre-1994. And it is not that there were less people at these institutions, it is merely that the employees worked, were qualified and were experienced. What you see today would not have happened back then.

I spoke to a guy behind me while we all shuffled about like sheeples...
He had driven all the way from Brits to Kdump as apparently its a total shambles there...I guess we need to be thankful for small mercies...

Have to say , my experience in Midrand RTMC (Waterfall) was nothing short of surprising. Made a booking to be there at 13h00. Was ushered inside just before 1pm, had my forms already filled in so just needed to do fingerprints and hand in my eye test form. Was in and out within 20mins, including my temp license. Would have been 15mins if I could have paid online.

If all the RTMC offices would be as organised, the backlog will quickly be sorted!

This is the government, of course you will have to stand in the queue to present them the proof of payment...
