In hindsight, having considered the points below, was the right squad selected; and if the selectors were aware of these points why didn't they pick the squad accordingly to increase the chances to win?
'Rules make it hard to play part-time bowler' - Dravid
The are the new rules made over time leading up to the CWC:
- 5 fielders within the 30 yard circle at all times
- Only 4 fielders allowed ooutside the circle in non-powerplay overs.
- Only 2 fielders allowed outside the circle for mandatory batting power play (Over 1-10)
- Only 3 fielders allowed outside the circle for 2nd power play taken anytime before the 40th over
- Two new balls to be used from each end
- Two bouncers allowed per over
Listening to Dravid and Smith applying these rules to the context of the CWC in Australia&NZ's huge pitches, two things stand out:
- Part timers add no value
- Contaning bowlers add no value
- Strike bowlers are key
What I would've changed based on this:
A - Straight away I'd drop allrounders cum part-timers Parnell, Farhaan (vindicates the exclusion of Frylinck, McLaren, Wiese&RvdM). Philander wouldn't be a frontline seamer but he would be in the squad.
B - Drop Abbott and Phangiso
- Bring in Tsotsobe, Marchant, Eddie Leie & Neil Mckenzie.
I talked up Rilee based on a few innings of his where he impressed after getting in. He had played 9 ODIs, including 4 ducks and had an average just above 10 when the squad was named, but how on earth did he make it to the CWC squad? How did the selctors make that mistake? Stephen Cook should have made it ahead of him, natural opener, mature&experienced, plus has a cool head.
Taking their suggestions on board this is what the XI and squad should have looked like (6 specialist batsmen + 5 specialist bowlers):
XI*: Amla, Cook, Faf, AB(wk), McKenzie, JP, Philander, Steyn, Morkel, Tsotsobe, Tahir;
RESERVES: Marchant, QdK/MvW, Leie, Miller
*QdK is not good enough to displace any of those batsmen when trying to win a WC with just 6 batsmen I think, and those are the five best strike bowlers in the country. Runs and wickets guaranteed.
Dravid & Biff weren't really standout ODI players, the former slow, and the latter a serial failure as leader at ICC tounaments. So one would be forgiven for ignoring their insight on that basis ... as our selectors have clearly done. It seems Clive Lloyd followed their suggestion because the West Indies have selected more specialists than allrounders/part-timers.
