They don't 'need' it. They must sacrifice their heating and cooking for the liberal world order. All 'current thing' folks should immediatly cut off their electricity and gas supplies for the war effort. No putin gas is a moral victory against him and that will show him, its also a victory for global warming.
Not just heating, lots of industry relies on it. Germany has a huge chemical industry that requires the gas:
FRANKFURT, July 27 (Reuters) - Germany’s BASF, the world’s largest chemical company, is considering further cuts to ammonia production due to soaring natural gas prices, two sources familiar with the matter said, with potential ramifications from farming to fizzy drinks.
Germany’s biggest ammonia maker SKW Piesteritz and number four Ineos also said they could not rule out production cuts as the country grapples with disruption to Russian gas supplies.
Ammonia plays a key role in the manufacturing of fertiliser, engineering plastics and diesel exhaust fluid. Its production also yields high-purity carbon dioxide (CO2) as a byproduct, which is needed by the meat and fizzy drinks industries.

Most ammonia goes into nitrogen fertilisers but other uses include diesel exhaust fluid AdBlue and engineering plastics.

During normal times, ammonia production accounts for about 4.5% of the natural gas used by German industry.

Note Germany already has cut gas usage by ~15% in the first half year, 35% in May,
Power generators, which typically account for about 10% of the nation’s demand, have also used less gas this year. The month of May was an exception, partly due to lower availability of power from renewable sources.
Germany’s total gas consumption fell by 14% to 460 billion kilowatt hours in the first five months of the year, according to BDEW.
Or they could just do the logical thing and satisfy both constraints by building nuclear power stations.
Sure, they have a short-term energy problem, but let's build a nuclear power station that will take at least 8-10 years to construct, great solution, you pass with flying colors. /s
They're already building out a lot of renewable power generation, that's all going to come online within the next few years, most of the offshore stuff is set to be 2027/28 though (still way faster than nuclear).
All these European countries, especially Germany should go f**k themselves. They made the decision to do away with coal-powered energy and rely on green energy and import of dirty gas from Russia. Don't cry now when you realize green energy does not work and Russia cuts your supplies. Get off your lazy a$$es and start mining for coal and build more coal-powered stations. In 20 years you will be energy independent again. Shoot any person who comes with 'green energy' on sight,
And as usual, you understand nothing.
Renewable hasn't failed, they are still busy building it out, they are still busy upgrading their grid system, they are still transitioning, the gas was to help with the transition.
Coal reserves in Germany aren't great, lignite is pretty bad for energy density. They shut down the coal plants early because they were not economical to run, now they are, so there are some on standby if needed, they're not running now.
Building any coal power plants right now would just be stupid, again, same as nuclear, would take years to build, meanwhile you could just build cheaper renewable etc., which they're already doing.
Coal revival only temporary
Kerstin Andreae, head of the German Association of Energy and Water Industries, told German public broadcaster ARD on Monday that reserve power plants burning German lignite can be brought online in "a relatively short time span." Those using hard coal for electricity generation would need
coal imports from abroad, she said.
Germany closed its last remaining hard coal mine in 2018, and has since relied on Russia for half of its needs of the fossil fuel. "Russian coal can be completely replaced by other countries in a few months. Especially from the US, Colombia and South Africa," Alexander Bethe, board chairman of the Association of Coal Importers, said in a statement.
While parliament is scheduled to vote on the coal bill by July 8, the government has made it clear that t
he revival of the fossil fuel in Germany will last only until March 2024. By that time, Berlin wants to have Russian gas supplies reduced to about 10%, from 55% before the war and 35% currently.
Germany has struggled to fill its gas storage sites since Russia began throttling its supply. Among the possible solutions are an increased use of coal for power production, and industry incentives to reduce consumption.

Renewables provide 49 per cent of power used in Germany in first half of 2022
The preliminary figures were calculated under European Union requirements that base market share of individual electricity sources on usage rather than production, a basis also adopted by Berlin for its climate target definitions, they said.

As an aside, gas reduction even in households would have been a natural transition (for heating), heat pumps are just so much more efficient.
