I was watching some interviews with Russian experts where they were saying it's not manufactured propaganda, it's Putin's actual view of the world. He doesn't believe the Ukrainians would fight Russia so he really believes he's fighting NATO forces on the ground. Apparently that's why the Russians were so unprepared because they went in believing the Ukrainian military would step aside as they did in Crimea and the Russians would just role in and save the Ukrainians from the pro-western government.

I'm not sure if I can believe that he's that detached from reality. It's a very scary prospect if he is - completely changes the picture of Russian television preparing their audiences for nuclear war.
