NATO tried it's luck from that time, they thought Russia would not push back. Usurped agreements and inciting coups, after all Russia was weak right?
You reckon they've regressed? Because what we've seen in the past 2 and a half months doesn't inspire confidence. Even the state doesn't want the Russian populace to see the general disorganisation. Finland and Sweden have vowed to disregard threats from the Kremlin and join NATO.

In all honesty, Russian military hasn't regressed at all... Up until now they've only ever "fought" against a much weaker opponent so the weaknesses inherent in their military didn't show.

I still struggle to understand the 'Z', 'V' and the lesser used 'O' symbol. I can under it being used to mark groupings, but the Russians took it to a whole next level. What meaning does those symbols have in Russia in any case?

In my view, it is stupid PR.
Its entirely stupid PR that they can try and use to get the population to rally around a symbol.

IMO if Russia had stalled in asserting itself, Russia would have been neutered to the delight of the west,

Putin accuses the West of backing threats of 'nuclear war,' provoking Ukraine conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the West in his Victory Day speech Monday at the Kremlin, claiming that the U.S. and other countries had propped up a "threat" on Russia's borders and had even supported threats of nuclear war against his country.

"Russia has always stood up for an international system of equality," Putin said, according to a translation from the German outlet Deutsche-Welle. "We have always tried to find compromise solutions… Other countries had completely different plans."

"They have tried to attack our historical territories like the Crimea. They have threatened to use nuclear war, and the West has supported these military actions carried out in our neighborhood and that is why it was a threat we couldn't accept," the Russian president added. He claimed there was a "threat to our border."

The past few weeks, Putin has been focussing a lot on reasons for a full nuclear attack on the West. I suspect these are no longer threats and that Nuclear attacks on one or more Western countries are becoming imminent.

Yes, every country with nukes has this threat. It is called Mutual Assured Destruction. Go re-read the contract.

"Russia has always stood up for an international system of equality," Putin said, according to a translation from the German outlet Deutsche-Welle. "We have always tried to find compromise solutions… Other countries had completely different plans."
True for almost any country on Earth. All have systems of equality and yet have very different plans which often contract those values. Nothing new there Putin.

"They have tried to attack our historical territories like the Crimea. They have threatened to use nuclear war, and the West has supported these military actions carried out in our neighborhood and that is why it was a threat we couldn't accept," the Russian president added. Every country has threats to it's border. No-one is excluded. Currently you are that threat.

Looks to me like Putin has a serious case of paranoia and victim mentality.
