I think Russia dropped the ball here. Perhaps it had something to do with wrecked economy coming out of the USSR but they, together with Ukraine, had a decent aircraft manufacturing industry, with most componentry sourced from either side.
There is irony in that, Superjet was intended to be a replacement for foreign airplanes, but it is sort of impossible to do so with obliterated industry to zero. it requires decades and serious attitude, not funds theft and using foreign components (instead of making own).I think Russia dropped the ball here.
