It's not even as if the migration crisis is just happening out of the blue. Take Venezuela, where a lot of the migrants, refugees really, are from. Maduro and Putin are tight. Trump and Putin are tight. These things cannot be denied. Trump's real estate businesses famously benefited from patronage by Russian organized crime. Putin really is the kingpin of organized crime in Russia. And Trump critically benefited by Russian interference in the 2016 election. These things are not even up for debate. It may be less obvious to to draw lines of support between Maduro and Trump, but it's noteworthy that there are many big oil interests (within and outside the US) which heavily support Trump, and there's mountains of money to be made from oil in Venezuela.
2014
- Crimea is annexed by Russia
- Venezuelan crisis (long running protests against economic and political situation from the time of Chavez) intensifies.
- Overt and intense campaign of repression of protesters by the government of Maduro starts. Among other notable actions by the Venezuelan government against its citizens.
2015
- Migration from Venezuela increases dramatically in response
2016
- Trump's political campaign kicks off, with migration as a central campaigning issue.
- Trump publicly praises Putin. Putin does so in return
- At one point Trump publicly calls on Russia to hack into the DCN - The mail servers fiasco. And they give him what he requests too.
2017
- Trump orders sanctions to completely cut Venezuela from US markets. Which on top of an already bad situation, increased migration even more.
2019
- Results of investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 US elections are made public. Including proof:
- That Russia intentionally and strategically interfered in the 2016 US elections
- That the Russian effort code named Project Lakhta was ordered directly by Putin.
- That the objectives were to sabotage the Clinton campaign and to promote Donald Trump
- That the main mode of interference came in the form of widespread hacking, as well as intense social media disinformation and propaganda
- That both religious conservatives and military personal were targeted using the issue of migration strategically in a storm of posts and memes on social media and fringe, or state sponsored publications online. Since studies found that:
- Religious conservatives were likely to disapprove of Trump's general lifestyle and scandals.
- Military personnel were likely to disapprove of Trump due to his record around Vietnam, and his mocking of Gold Star parents and John McCain.
- But that the issue of migration could be exploited to garner support from both demographics.
2017-2020
- Trump does nothing meaningful to mitigate migration. The border wall is one of the biggest political white elephants ever perpetrated.
2021-2024
- Trump loyalists in the house and senate practically hamstrings any and all efforts toward the normal working of these bodies of state
2024
- Trump and loyalists publicly and flagrantly oppose efforts to deal with migration effectively - Expressly with the intent to use the migration, once again, as a campaigning issue. Making zero secret of it too.
- Results of an investigation into RT is made public. With actions taken against them and collaborating businesses. No surprise when the content pushed by the implicated collaborators are mostly in support of Trump.
Russia and its allies (which includes Donald Trump, MAGA and even Project 2025 imho) are well known to have zero scruples around weaponizing migration.
A prime example is the Belarus-Polish migration crisis (within the greater context of the Syrian refugee crisis which started in 2011 - within context of the Crisis in Syria - Which there can be no doubt is directly attributable to intense, overt cooperation between Putin and the Assad regime), where Syrian refugees with overt assistance from Russia and Belarus were transported to the Polish border. With the express intent to drive them into the EU. To make things difficult for the EU. And later serve as the foundation of political interference there.
I have zero doubt that a major objective of Russian actions in North Africa recently have been to stimulate further migration from Africa into the EU. Russian political interference in the EU has also used the various migration crises (they've had a hand in causing) as a core part of their info strategy.
And, in general there should be no,
zero, doubt about
why exactly it is that Trump's political campaign positions are so closely aligned with Russian efforts to influence US voters.
