Both sides using heavier weapons, Finnish president says

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto says both sides in the Ukraine war are now using heavier weapons, including thermobaric bombs in Russia’s case.

“We are supporting Ukraine with increasingly heavy weaponry. And on the other hand, Russia has also begun to use very powerful weapons, thermobaric bombs that are in fact weapons of mass destruction,” Niinisto said during security policy talks at his summer residence in Naantali.

Ukraine and NATO countries have also accused Russia of using thermobaric bombs, which are also known as vacuum bombs and are much more devastating than conventional explosives.

There are foreign fighters there, and they just lost any incentives to surrender.

Separatist leader warns Ukrainian forces in Severodonetsk must ‘surrender or die’

Ukrainian forces in Severodonetsk must either “surrender or die”, a Russian-backed separatist leader in eastern Ukraine’s self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) has warned.

“They have no other option,” Eduard Basurin, deputy head of the People’s Militia Department in the breakaway region, was quoted as saying by Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency.

Basurin also claimed Ukrainian forces had blocked themselves in Severodonetsk by blowing up the last bridge connecting it to the nearby city of Lysychansk, meaning they are unable to pull back. Al Jazeera could not independently verify his report.

Severodonetsk and Lysychansk are situated on the eastern and western bank of the Siverskyi Donets River respectively

Wikipedia fights Russian order to remove Ukraine war information

The Wikimedia Foundation, which owns Wikipedia, has filed an appeal against a Moscow court decision demanding that it remove information related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, arguing that people have a right to know the facts of the war.

A Moscow court fined the Wikimedia Foundation 5 million roubles ($88,000) for refusing to remove what it termed disinformation from Russian-language Wikipedia articles on the war including “The Russian Invasion of Ukraine”, “War Crimes during the Russian Invasion of Ukraine” and “Massacre in Bucha”.

“This decision implies that well-sourced, verified knowledge on Wikipedia that is inconsistent with Russian government accounts constitutes disinformation,” Stephen LaPorte, associate general counsel at the Wikimedia Foundation, said in a statement.

Wikipedia, which says it offers “the second draft of history”, is one of the few remaining major fact-checked Russian-language sources of information for Russians after a media crackdown by the Kremlin.

The Moscow court argued that what it cast as the disinformation on Wikipedia posed a risk to public order in Russia and that the Foundation, with its headquarters in San Francisco, California, was operating inside Russia.

It is hilarious to watch all the ...
"Ukraine can win this war"
"Russian wants to take over Kiev and cause regime change"
"These sanctions will hurt Russia enough to stop the war" ...
conspiracy theorists and propaganda pushers once again lose ALL credibility.
That was their stated goal from the beginning. Learn to read.

Shame, dipping your head into comics or corporate media and thinking what you read is not fiction /facepalm.
Zero Credibility Propagandist.

But what was Russia doing in Kyiv? What did Putin mean back in 2014 when he said he could take over Kyiv in less than 2 weeks? Why is Russia attempting to hold referendums in captured regions? Are are they issuing new ID's in these regions? Were they not planning to do the same in Kyiv?

Opinions from the parallel Universe

Some very leading questions there, but like in all countries there are people with differing views. Some for, some against. Some fearing Nato/EU would attack, some thinking not.

Propaganda is a good tool to instill fear in people to make them accept the unacceptable. In comparison I can view America after 9/11. The world changed completely. Before that we were all optimistic about the new millennium, but afterwards a lot of restrictions on personal freedoms were forced - out of fear. It is a powerful tool.

But if I was a Russian with the fear of the FSB coming knocking on my door and dragging my ass of to a Gulag somewhere, then i too would hesitate to speak my mind openly. Who knows who this dude is with the camera. Could be an FSB trap too.

You conspiracy theorists can come up with as many explanations you want, ask all the questions you want forever, the simple fact is that until Russia has taken over Kiev and installed a new leader, all it ever will be is a conspiracy theory.

It's not a conspiracy theory. Putin has previous (rather nonchalantly) claimed he could take over Kyiv in less than 2 weeks. It's also not a conspiracy theory that Russia was organising referendums a la 2014 Crimea style, in captured territories. My questions are valid.

Yeah for sure... they didn't send masses and masses of equipment and lose thousands of soldiers for shytes and giggles.

**EDIT**

In all honesty, if Russia hadn't tried the Kiev shyte they would probably have been way more successful in solidifying their hold over eastern Ukraine, and may even have managed to capture all of its coastline.

So cute to see people cling to conspiracy theories that cannot be debunked.
Come back when the Putin Shite has actually taken over Kiev and installed his own puppet.

aka

"When somebody is attacking you with a knife, only come back with a grievance once you get stabbed. Until then it's impossible to tell one way or another what the attackers true intention is even though he is coming at you with the knife and he is telling you directly he wants to stab you and he is lunging at you with the knife."

You can do better troll.

You will only ever have these piss poor analogies to support your conspiracy theories until the Putin idiot actually takes over Kiev and installs a new leader.

The usual obfuscation and name calling then.
I am sure you can climb off your high horse and forgive me for referring to Putin as "Putin Shite". And I don't care about accusations from people that push conspiracy theories that cannot ever be debunked. But hey, good luck, when the Putin idiot actually takes over Kiev and installs a new leader then you can come back and say "hah, told ya so". Good luck with that one.

What amazes me, is that lots of Russians think, that on some reason the west would like to attack them.
On one side they are the strongest , then they fear that someone will attack them , what? 6 Russian wars later?

Also if anyone waits for any empathy from them towards Ukraine, they haven't thought what Russia did to Chechnya.

The International Defence Legion of Ukraine includes representatives of 55 countries.
Source: Damien Magru, Legion Speaker, at a briefing in Kyiv on 13 June, Interfax-Ukraine quotes
Quote: "We have representatives of more than 50 countries and citizenships. When I last looked, there were 55 [countries and citizenships]. We have representatives of countries from all parts of the world, all continents, even as far as Brazil, South Korea, and Australia."
Details: According to Magru, the largest number of soldiers in the International Legion are US and British citizens, followed by Poland and Canada, the representatives of Baltic countries and the northern countries, including Finland.
Magra emphasised that the International Legion is part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, so it is funded by the Ukrainian army.
He clarified that all legionnaires receive the same salary as any other military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and therefore cannot be considered mercenaries.

He explained that according to international law, funding is the primary motivation of mercenaries and they should receive more money than the military personnel of the army they are fighting for.
Quote from Magru: "This applies to all expenses on accommodation, salaries of soldiers, weapons and ammunition. Additional funds are raised from private donors, primarily from the West, and we spend this money, which we fundraise for on different platforms through various intermediaries, exclusively on equipment for our fighters. This is not part of the standard military kit issued by the Armed Forces of Ukraine and has no funding through state channels of Ukraine. but it is needed on the battlefield.
Therefore, according to international law, by definition, we can’t be mercenaries. Moreover, we have all the documents in accordance with Ukrainian law, which prove that we are full employees of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. "
