Not current evidence. Current speculation. Difference.

Russia has been occupying that plant since March this year and they don't even have heavy weapons, Ukraine has all the incentive to attack it.

Russia’s defense ministry said Thursday that its forces did not have heavy weapons deployed at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, accusing Kyiv of preparing a “provocation” at the station.

“Russian troops have no heavy weapons either on the territory of the station or in areas around it. There are only guard units,” the ministry said in a statement.

So out of the top of my head, they want to cause a serious accident so that they can eventually draw NATO into the war?

You are using propaganda to try to resolve a combat situation. Guns don't take propaganda bullets. You are not thinking like a strategist. Pull your heads out of Kremlin's arse for 5 minutes and put yourself in the shoes of an enemy combatant. Now try.

why didn't the enemy combatant bomb it in March? it would have been more effective,

makes no sense.

Why would you blow up your own leverage? Think in terms of a hostage taker. Why would you kill your own hostages? You have the ultimate gun and the ultimate hostages. Why just throw that away?

Why would you blow it up now then?
A hostage taker doesn't want to destroy the host area, he wants the money to f-off

If a hostage taker does not get what he wants, he kills the hostages. If you rush in and attempt to attack or subdue him, he will kill the hostages. He will hole himself up in there good and proper buying time until he gets what he wants. And if he is a terrorist, he will kill them anyway.

Time is of the essence to getting it resolved as quickly as possible because at some point, hostages are going to die and nuclear plants are going to get blown up. It's not a matter of it but when.

NATO expansion, having a militarized force in Ukraine that incircles Russia is a deep security threat. They don't have a "right", they are just reacting the way that America or China reacts when their spheres of influence is threatened. The Russians have been threatening about NATO expansion for the last 20 years. No one thought that they were serious, now they showed that they were always serious. International Politics is unfortunately not about charity.
And let's not forget Crimea with their naval base. Was this to fall into the West's hands, it would be very easy to control, restrict or block access to Russian coast within the Black Sea (I. E. Rostov or Krasnodar).

Russia needs an offramp, finally we are agreeing on something. That is the point that Chomsky made, in the unlikely event that Russia "is defeated", nothing stops Putin from firing a ton of rockets into those nuclear power stations...
