Here’s a
story published this week by
@holodmedia about Russian battalion volunteers passing through the towns of
Totskoe Vtoroe (outside Orenburg) and
Mulino (outside Nizhny Novgorod) during their crash-course basic training before deployment to Ukraine.
⚦ Many of the men signing up for this work are apparently terrorizing the residents in these towns before they’re sent to the frontlines, often turning their drunken gazes on the local women. There are patrol guards stationed in the towns, but they’re staffed by the volunteers themselves!
In early August,
Dmitry Medvedev visited Totskoe to inspect the training of new troops (as you’d expect, there were apparently rapid street-sweeping efforts before his arrival). Sources told Holod Media that the influx of desperate-for-cash, morally questionable volunteers has been a nightmare for the people living in these towns. One local called them “the lowest social strata,” arguing that “even a monkey” can be trained to be a soldier, but not in the short time these volunteers spend preparing to fight in Ukraine.
One woman who spoke to Holod Media expressed confidence that these volunteers will be “re-educated” once they’re in the field and under active command, but their bad behavior while still in Russia and their lack of proper training seem to me more like a recipe for even worse conduct in Ukraine. If regular Russian soldiers were capable of the atrocities in places like Bucha and Andriivka, how much worse might it be under occupation by these undisciplined volunteer battalions?
