Arguably too costly and it leads to demoralizing your own population to fight for something they don't believe in.Why not ? It is all in the ability to project force..
The us for one has spent a lot of time and trouble working on doing that.
Never mind they have allies in that side of the world that can provide basing etc
Why should Americans die to save North Korea from itself in the modern day.?
The desire to build a bigger empire just for the sake of it is also not there anymore, evidence by the fact that the US can expand and incorporate some of the territories they hold as full states but they don't seem to want to do that.
Historically it is a sign that an empire is dying when they over extend and then still lash out violently and randomly to project power.
