Not beholden to their governments - you remember the Iraqi war right? Anyone critiquing back then would have out of the 'safe zone' and in the ranks of the unemployed.

Iraq 1991 or Iraq 2003? I see we're back to Iraq again. But anyway:

The U.S. rationale for the Iraq War has faced heavy criticism from an array of popular and official sources both inside and outside the United States. Putting this controversy aside, both proponents and opponents of the invasion have also criticised the prosecution of the war effort along a number of lines. Most significantly, critics have assailed the U.S. and its allies for not devoting enough troops to the mission, not adequately planning for post-invasion Iraq, and for permitting and perpetrating widespread human rights abuses. As the war has progressed, critics have also railed against the high human and financial costs.

Try reading the British press then:

Guy is living in fantasy land.

Sad thing is a simple google search brings back thousands of articles that cause his deluded world view to shatter. Yet he can't seem to get snap out of his hypnotic state.

Weapons of mass destruction. Eventually it became such a farce, that when the first one broke ranks, other followed. I guess they could not wait.

If the US and the UK are having trouble finding weapons of mass destruction, then they shouldn't be getting all hot and bothered.
The internet's best-known search engine Google appears to be in a somewhat similar boat.
Clicking on "I'm feeling lucky" when searching for "weapons of mass destruction", takes one to a site that has a heading "Can't find weapons of mass destruction". (clicking on this button is supposed to take one to the top ranking site which is listed up when a normal search is done.)
The text on the page reads as under:

"These Weapons of Mass Destruction cannot be displayed. The weapons you are looking for are currently unavailable. The country might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your weapons inspectors mandate."
"Please try the following:

  • Click the Regime change button, or try again later.
  • If you are George Bush and typed the country's name in the address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly. (IRAQ).
  • To check your weapons inspector settings, click the UN menu, and then click Weapons Inspector Options. On the Security Council tab, click Consensus. The settings should match those provided by your government or NATO.
  • If the Security Council has enabled it, The United States of America can examine your country and automatically discover Weapons of Mass Destruction.

"If you would like to use the CIA to try and discover them, click Detect weapons

  • Some countries require 128 thousand troops to liberate them. Click the Panic menu and then click About US foreign policy to determine what regime they will install.
  • If you are an Old European Country trying to protect your interests, make sure your options are left wide open as long as possible. Click the Tools menu, and then click on League of Nations. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Head in the Sand section and check settings for your exports to Iraq.
  • Click the Bomb button if you are Donald Rumsfeld.

"Cannot find weapons or CIA Error
Iraqi Explorer."

I don't remember the West annexing Iraq. Nor do I remember them taking people away eg mothers and children.

So I don't remember Iraq.

Do you remember the Crimean Tartars when Russians ruled there earlier on and now:

As a part of the Russian famine of 1921 the Peninsula suffered widespread starvation.[91] More than 100,000 Crimean Tatars starved to death,[91] and tens of thousands of Tatars fled to Turkey or Romania.[92] Thousands more were deported or killed during the collectivization in 1928–29.[92] The Soviet government's "collectivization" policies led to a major nationwide famine in 1931–33. Between 1917 and 1933, 150,000 Tatars—about 50% of the population at the time—either were killed or forced out of Crimea.[93] During Stalin's Great Purge, statesmen and intellectuals such as Veli Ibraimov and Bekir Çoban-zade were imprisoned or executed on various charges.[92]

After the annexation of Crimea by Russian Federation, Crimean Tatars are reportedly persecuted and discriminated by Russian authorities, including cases of torture, arbitrary detentions, forced disappearances by Russian security forces and courts.[132][133][134]

On 12 June 2018, Ukraine lodged a memorandum consisting of 17,500 pages of text in 29 volumes to the UN's International Court of Justice about racial discrimination against Crimean Tatars by Russian authorities in occupied Crimea and state financing of terrorism by Russian Federation in Donbas.[135][136]
