I never knew what a truly nice little city Mariupol was before they destroyed it and I researched it a bit. It really was it's own little quaint, but pleasant cultural microcosm. I think it being gone is a bit like a species of animal going extinct. Never to be seen again. You can't fake the depth of character that place had, in an attempt to make it right, any more than you can bring a lost species back using furry or feathered automatons.

That is of course just my perception. But it's loss is sad I think even apart from the horror of any city just being levelled by barbarians. And it is a crime.

Second world war? Lol not even close.
yeah.... I too find it hard to believe. WW2 was on another level. It was mostly dumb stuff, but so, so much of it. But then... About 10 000 V1 and V2 rockets were fired at Britain alone.
As another indicator. There are still literally thousands of tons of unexploded ordinance scattered across much of the world today. And many more thousands of tons of it has already been cleared and defused. And that's only the unexploded stuff.
Rocket artillery was off the scale. And then consider it was also the time of battleship warfare in the pacific.

Here's a closeup...

16 inch shells. Almost half a metre calibre.

It was all magnitudes larger.
