Again in Putins drivel writings and certainly reading through quite a bit of socialist and Marxist stuff ............ the West, US, Nato <insert baddy de jour here>, all of these are responsible for whatever ills Putin felt his Russia had.
(See @Solarion #8293 - asks just this question - its a good question to ask.)

The fact remains - it was his decision to go to war.

At best, those supporting him can only but dredge up a myriad of reasons for doing so, but none of this will bring a better future for Russia.

If, as the RU support base would have us believe, the UA was THAT bad - why didn't the bulk of UA people simply allow themselves to be freed by the RU forces?
Why did so many countries vote to expel RU from the human rights council? Reminder 96 for, 24 against 58 abstentions. Even the abstentions and against votes combined don't tally to 96. Is most of the world wrong?
Why didn't Finland and Sweden join NATO earlier if the UA was such a big threat?
Why did so many oligarchs get away from RU as soon as possible?
What did Putin expect was going to happen, in 2021 they (RU) were something like the 5th largest economy in the EU region. That should have been a source of pride for Russia.
When RU did invade, why did they initially attack the western part of UA then pull back?
Why did they take Snake Island then pull out?
Why does RU detest freedom? To quote Vladislav Surkov “An overdose of freedom is lethal to a state,”
Why has Russia had one man at the helm for so long?
If the UA economy was so poor prior to war, what made Russia think they were going to be a threat?
What made Russia believe NATO was expanding - only to attack Russia? Hell, the NATO member countries were investing in Russia.
Why does Lavrov or Peskov feel the need to justify the war, if its the right thing to do?

I also think passions get in the way of common sense - sometimes, people are so passionate about RU winning or UA winning - and want to press their reasons for this belief, that we forget, nobody is winning right now. Least of all RU and UA.

Again, I dont particularly want to get into a debate on this ......... these are just the thoughts that are in my mind.

This is a well written post! Those are excellent questions to think about. Thank you for the article about Surkov. Gonna read that now. I found the non-paywalled version of the article: https://maplemotivation.com/vladislav-surkov-an-overdose-of-freedom-is-lethal-to-a-state/

The Russian puppeteer himself.

"It works"... Simply because the state orchestrated clockwork diorama culture he is the architect of keeps those currently in power in power for longer.

The thing is, not all Russians are pro war, and not all Russians are happy with the status quo.

As I said, I have this Russian lady who works for me, and we did work in Russia prior to all of this.
Right now she is in SA temporarily, with her husband, and we are working on getting them to a friendly nation, closer to us. Edit - she is not pro war either I should add -

Like SA, we have the socialist tw@ts at the helm, but not all of us like what they are doing or the direction the country is going. Unfortunately, a bunch of people support the leader, blindly, and lo que sera - sera.

I suppose we have the same when people make the comment, ALL white South Africans are racist.
Not true.

Putin is the problem IMHO.

While I broadly agree with you there are people ( not Putin ) who have openly supported what he is doing. They are as bad as him. We have people on MYBB who also openly support what he is doing and has become. Unfortunately Russians will be branded by the actions of their leader and his army

From your article :

“People need it,” he says in response to my comment that much of that propaganda is dangerous. “Most people need their heads to be filled with thoughts.

“You are not going to feed people with some highly intellectual discourse. Most people eat simple foods. Not the kind of food we are having tonight. Generally most people consume very simple-meaning beliefs. This is normal. There is haute cuisine, and there is McDonald’s,” he laughs. “Everyone takes advantage of such people all over the world.”

For years I've been thinking on why people follow some religion, conspiracy , cult and so on...

It's a such a vulgar way to describe this.

Putin has been trying as hard as he can to control the narative within russia by being heavy handed on the media etc. He only wants his story out there.
I think he fears if the ordinary russian learns the true state of things he will lose his head.
Once the ordinary population realises where russia has been taken back to and how things are going to be for many years going forward he has better have a ton of bodyguards.
Also I sense there is a lot of racism of the russians towards ukrainians which is helping Putin.
