It has been reported that the above vessel is aground on a sand-bank off East London.

It would appear that both engines failed and she then then ran aground.

Salvage attemps are continuing.

Anymore news on this......?

As far as I am aware they're still fiddling with the poor ship. It seems to be stuck in our dear little harbor :D

If she is aground it's a big fat egg on the captains face. When you lose power on a ship you're supposed to drop the anchor. AFAIK Aghulas has got 2 on the bow and 2 on the stern. How bad was the wind?

A google search brings up that the SAS Aghulas is the ice breaker working in antartica. This is the Safmarine Agulhas, a container ship. Am I right?

It would have been embarrasing if a ship that can tear through ice gets stuck in a small bay

Also take a gander here.

Yes, it's the container :D And it would rock if it was the ice cutter ;)

Actually SA AGULHAS is the ice breaker. MV AGULHAS is the container ship. SAS is reserved for SA Navy vessels :)

Agulhas

Guys,

if you want to know the whole story on the Agulhas go to the web site
www.avcom.co.za - go general aviation discussions, then look for the thread about ship aground in East London

Very facinating story!

Regards

Craneman:)
