Nothing like free advertising.

journalists will try and get information before anybody else does. i dont think they would be in trouble. it's the person who made this information available to them who is gonna get crapped on

There is a system of "in good faith" working between news makers and journo's.

This announcement was embargoed for Sunday 18:00. This means that Vodacom actually supplied the information in good time to Reuters so they could prepare the story and release it at the approved time.

Be sure that "embargo breaking" is not taken kindly in the PR circles, and have pity on the Reuters guy who broke the embargo.

Number Portability.

I look forward to the day when I can use the same cell phone number on any network.
Watching Channel 58 on DSTV the other day it seems that a lot petitioning for this to happen was expressed at The Portfolio Committee on Communications.

Just a hunch, but this is possibly in reaction to the MTN Wow Wow thing? (50% off from 17:00 to 21:00, or something like that...)

you pay a certain amount every month, and get discounted call and mms rates. or something to that effect

from an article at iafrica.com:
Says Alan Knott-Craig, CEO of the Vodacom Group: "This is a continuation of a trend to lower cell phone tariffs in a competitive environment.

"Reductions over the past year have included a ten percent reduction in pre-paid; a 60 percent reduction in SMS and a massive 90 percent reduction in rates for data. Other than these new reductions in tariffs, consumers can expect our data tariffs to become even more competitive as we complete the roll-out of our 3G network."
i like the part about the "more competitive" data tariffs as well :)

Well.. it's better than nothing. Step-by-step... :)
From Vodacom's side of view, they want to keep their subscribers and still generate more and more revenues.
It's a nice move from Vodacom, but I'm not happy that they define after hours(5pm - 8pm) as peak time.

Can anybody explain the MTN thingy in detail?

Anyway, regarding this reduced rates:
We have to be thankful...and give them credit for taking the 1st step....although i have to honestly add:
IM really disappointed - what the 1st reuters release made me understand was PEAK TIME reduction - this is a semi peak reduction - hopefully we will see real reductions to peak time soon.....

Just a note to those whop dont really realize how much we being RIPPED:
I was in China...bought a prepaid card : rate to anywhere in China and across all networks was : 15c South African per min! you pay 15c per min incoming as well - but still -thats real cheap!!!
Hong Kong was about 25c per min!

Hope that Vodacoms bold step will lead to something like that...........

a question: how will this effect free minutes on talk 240 per second etc

Has anyone noticed that the reduced rate is only between the peak times of 17H00 to 20H00?

I think a bit of an over reaction by everyone to be honest.

If it was for peak times period I could understand the fracas.
I think it is supposed to be 07H00....

they're calling it "happy hours" so presumably 17h00-20h00 is correct (happy hours at pubs and stuff are normally during this time slot, after signoff from work)

My T-Mobile (USA) account comes to just under $30 per month and includes 300 free anytime minutes and unlimited off-peak calls.

Vodacom charging r1.49 per minute for a Vodacom terminated call really doesn't impress me - these should be free anytime of the day now that they can self-provide.
