I have replaced the stock thermal paste with Arctic Silver 5 and I have also lapped the heatsink (drops a few degrees or so off the temps ). I've done the job a few times on a few different heatsinks (CPUs and GPUs) so you can rest assured that it's sitting flush, perfectly flat, etc. Here's a link on TechPowerUp where they've reviewed the HD3850 and they also have the X1900XTX on there. Runs GOW and Crysis on high settings (sans full AA and Aniso) decently at 1440x900. I've got a 22", so I just needed that extra boost for 1680x1050 .
