I am in the UAE, was only meant to be a short 2 years but will be here longer how long not sure depends on what is next.
Nice. My wife is eager to go there as she's an educator... $, which I get, but the expat thing is a bit different than settling permanent. I guess the older you get the harder this becomes, I feel it now. I think the next 5 years will be crucial in deciding.

I have spoken to people been here decade +, it can be long term but of course no route for a permanent stay.

But you don't pay tax and benefits are great so you can build up for the next move to when you want to be permanent.

Teachers get paid good money here from what I am told.

This is the ultimate try it before you buy it place.

He's looking for attention.

Ultimately its you and your wife's decision that's all that really matters. I was also apprehensive about it so I know how you feel.
Really knob? It's a free site to post on.

Anyways, I've explained why to Neptuner...you're on your own with your dumb assumptions now.

Thats a positive outlook I'm sure @OhYeah84 's outlook is similar his just sharing his thoughts and excitement for new adventure. I guess once you placed and made the necessary arrangements the excitement sets in, but prior to that it's convincing yourself, and thats where I am.
Look, the other thing is this: my wife and I get to experience a new way to work and really and truely expand our knowledge which is great. Benefits us big time. Travel too which will become far easier in the Northern Hemisphere.

As for that EADC knob, no idea who he is, but he seems to know who I am based on a few lines of text. Awesome skill to have /s

At the end of the day, kids future, our future, not easy but then again this has been a decision years in the making. Spent many years checking things out while hoping things here get better (and SA is an awesome place to be for a lot of things), and they never did. Tipping point was crossed a few weeks ago and we are off in the New Year.

She will get a job in many countries, just make sure that she's on that country's critical skills list. Not sure what you do, but also check your occupation on the country of choice's critical skills list.
It makes it much easier when applying for jobs.

Here's a fun fact for you guys. Did you know you not allowed to fail a student twice in school. It's seen by the department as holding the children back. You have to pass them even if they can't read or write.

I suggest you talk to some teachers. That's the best part of my job I learn all sorts of things and get all sorts of stories from all avenues of life listening to the patients life stories.
No, that's not correct.

A pupil cannot be retained (failed) for more than one year in any of the four phases our schooling system offers.
Foundation (R -3)
Intermediate (4 - 6)
Senior (7 - 9)
FET (10 - 12)

The exception is grade 12, you have to pass grade 12 to promoted.

Failing your way through to Grade 12...easy to get promoted through.

I've missed your legendary stories tell us about being on the front lines fighting the poors burning the schools.

That was a police function in 1976.

I was never deployed in South Africa. Highly trained Permanent Force members were a bit expensive to use in townships. We were used externally to South Africa.

So there goes your nice little apartheid supporter dig. Sorry about that.

Though I can't imagine leaving dishes on there for 3 days itll start stinking

All that goes down the drain and there is only the lemon smell of the dishwasher pellet afterward with squeaky clean dishes.

One day BEE/AA will also be the past, just give it time, it's also not as worse as apartheid so we need less moaning.
And when will the corruption levels go down a bit?
I'm still reeling from the hospital R500k skinny jeans thing.
