Can't rely on the supplier and the costs are getting to the point where it's become more viable. In away it might help out the end user as the biggest users aren't residential

My feasibility studies are underway. Not as easy as taking a house off grid, but it can be done. Pity that we cannot generate with our neighbors. That would make things cheap as chips, relatively speaking.

"Six plants capable of producing over 1MW are set to go online in 2022, with the largest expected to have a capacity of 10W."

The largest is 10W! Lol, must be a typo. My little powerbank delivers more than that.

Should probably be 10MW?

Why is it always goodbye Eskom in these articles? I don’t believe that all these companies are installing solar and a massivly expensive multi-million Rand battery pack to save a few bucks. Probably only their partial daytime electricity requirements are covered by solar, the rest (night, rainy or cloudy days, etc.) comes from Eskom or the municipalities just as before.

What's stopping you :) I think we all have to accept the fact that the law on this is useless!

Maybe we should all start our own mini grids?

Just a heads-up! If more of the bigger companies are generating their own power, we will be paying even more for electricity!
I don't know, sometimes it's best to hope there are people out there that actually don't want to rip people off. Looks at ISP's and their battle with Telkom......

I know that you still have to register when you want to build a private 100MW solar farm, but when do you need to register? Just before you complete the build? Or before you start? It might be there are a lot more projects in the pipeline, they just haven't been registered yet. I mean as far as I know they can't decline registration as long as you are within the parameters?

But without the government, who would generate electricity?

Are they lowering the taxes and import duties on solar panels, Lithium batteries etc? Cos if not then this is all just more talk and no action.

Well in my experience more competition = better pricing.

Monopolies is where high pricing go and breed.

Define a 100MW solar Farm.....are 2 60 MW greater than 100MW??? you can build a 10 000 MW single Solar farm, Just split the thing into 50MW modules. No registration no worries.

I am not an expert, this is not gospel, but as far as I understand the promulgated rules, we're currently in this situation:

Wheeling power - licence needed from NERSA, Eskom permission needed or Muni permission.
Reselling power - permission needed - IPP in place, NERSA etc.

Self consumption < 100MW - none needed.
eg Business Park - self use, mining, industrial etc
