You know, all fair and well, but it would be so much more acceptable if the SA government was not actively supporting this madmans regime on every other front. Now we feed those we have turned our backs on. :(
Crisis, what crisis? R300m friendship fees? . Sheez.

spokesperson Thabo Masebe confirmed that South Africa was providing the aid to Zimbabwe.

This contravened the conditions of the aid that were outlined in September when the plan was announced.

According to the conditions, the R300m in aid was conditioned upon the successful formation of a unity government between Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF and the two factions of the Movement for Democratic Change.

Masebe said this was to ensure, "that the assistance reached the intended beneficiaries".

But as the situation in Zimbabwe has worsened, Masebe said that the food aid was necessary now.

"The aim is to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to circumvent a dire food security situation," said Masebe.

He said the aid would be released through new South African Development Community mechanisms that were announced last week.

"We are satisfied that the aid will reach the intended recipients in a non-partisan manner."
The same people were 'satisfied' and rubber stamped the last few elections in Zim as well  while rather blatanly undermining the will of the people they so vehemently profess to support.

I couldn't agree more.
It's not like we are without problems... Why not use this money in places like Musina where the Zim folks are going for medical treatment re the cholera

To be fair zimbabwe needs it more than we do. The people are suffering in a way i doubt most of us can imagine. And i am glad they are trying to distribute it independantly of zimbabwes political leaders..

I agree though, i would like to see an audit on how it is being spent and in what areas it is being distributed....

Why should we care?

They voted for Mugabe and enjoyed it when he started to take the white owned farms. Ultimately they need to pay the price for their own stupidity.

Exactly

And by helping them, they go from being desperate to content... It is only when the Zimbabwean people are desperate and starving that they will rise up, and go and kill mugabe and all his cronies. There is no other option. Zim will only move forward once he is dead, and a new government is in place

Trust me, they will hardly go to being content....they ARE desparate and starving at the moment....unfortunately alot of them are also brainwashed with by mugabe. The censorship and fear regime is controlling them, and parties who try rise up get slaughtered/imprisoned etc. Its not exactly a great situation for ppl to be in. I agree zim will only get better once he is out of power completely, no coalition no half measures...but in the meantime ppl are suffering, ppl are dying.....and if we could help alleviate some of this, then its only humane to do so.

How much does South Africa currently spend on welfare and social grants? You can't exactly go out throwing R300m around in the streets hoping that the less fortunate just come by and pick it up now.

Like the "humane thing" they did to the white farmers?

As mentioned before in this thread, the population were quite happy to vote for Mugape while he was treating the white farmers inhumanely and placing land in each ones hands - little did they know how it would backfire :D

I wonder why all the Zim immigrants don't go back to the farms they all own in Zim?

To think, these farmers were some of the best in the World today. Simply booted out with basically the shirts on their backs. Talk about ungrateful.

How foolish it was to rid the country of it's main source of income. Agriculture. What a doff move that proved to be.

In my opinion there was enough expertise, land and goodwill to go around for everybody in Zimbabwe.
Mugabe had to prove a point to Britain and that point cost the country its status as the Breadbasket of Africa to the Basketcase of Africa.
Now we all are going to pay. R300m? Talk R3Billion and change and this is only the beginning. The South African Government needs to be held up for negligence by allowing our neighbouring country to become destabilised and impoverished.

One could rattle on a whole long story. But what happened to those Farmers was not right. Plain and simple. And until the day this Government acknowledges that they will never know what Ubuntu means.

They never will. I doubt even the MDC will when they eventually take power.

The MDC have already said that the farms will not be handed back to the farmers.
They have however indicated that compensation for the farmers is necessary.
