SA fracking could move ahead quickly

Fracking can be good but under the cANCer it can only be bad, very bad.

Not necessarily. Mining environmental impact has been less under cANCer government's stringent Environmental legislation. Mining social responsibility has increased under cANCer Social Labor Plan requirements. Also, mining fatalities have reduced under cANCer intervention into Mine Health Safety.

dlk001, what's your view on this frenetic, fractious, flipping fracking fandangle?

I'm against this flipping fandangle  because there are many environmental impacts that I can classify as:

- unknown unknowns and
- known unknowns

yet the government wants to rush through the decision. So, this tells me it is politically motivated move. There must be some BEE link to Chancellor House.

unfortunately we need a new source of energy as importing oil is killing our economy and leaving us in the hands of other countries to dictate our fate.

Once we get our own energy supply to more reasonable levels, we will get more investment into the country as well as increase the real value of the rand

personally, I can't wait for this to kick off

I agree this country need more energy and we know where it is so go get it simple .

Greedy ****s is greedy ****s; we have shortness thereof here.

This is big money. Money talks.

So instead of being smart and building nuke and alternative energy stations and building electric cars, you opt for the backwards way of poisoning our water and making our land unstable. Awesome idea. What could possibly go wrong? Its not like SA needs clean drinking water or stable land.

They way you are thinking and behaving is discussed in this lecture by Richard Dawkins. Its known as the Tragedy of the Commons.

So sad :(

Alternative energy and electric cars are too expensive. The choices we all face are;
1. Continued reliance on oil primarily from very unstable countries
2. Very expensive alternatives
3. Cheap gas from fracking with a higher than normal risk to the environment,

Fracking is attractive because if done properly can give a country a serious economic boost.

The advantage to South Africa is not as great compared to other countries because SA doesn't use gas to the same extent. The main advantage would be export.

However, just because the US is going with Fracking in a big way, this alone has benefits for everyone else because of the reduced demand on other sources which will result in downward pressure on those prices. This is probably a reason for SA to not bother with fracking at all.

Alternative energy sources seems to be even more beyond the capability of SA industry, otherwise why hasn't SA industry done anything ? I'll tell you why. Not cost effective.

Govts like fracking because it offers energy security. But govts are hopeless at running any commercial operation. Their involvement in fracking should be limited to laying down the legal framework with significant regulations regarding safety and environment impact. But that assumes the ability to enforce regulation. And some are crap at that.
