OSS = Open Source Strategy.

-Choose FOSS
-Migrate to FOSS
-Develop in FOSS
-Use FOSS/open content licensing
-Promote FOSS in South Africa

FOSS?

This will be done in a phased approach, beginning with applications such as replacing MS Office with Open Office or KOffice and replacing Internet Explorer with Firefox.
KOffice?

He outlined the plans of the FOSS Programme Office (FPO), which is to begin operating in September, and the current status of open source implementation.
Ooooh .. job krehation.

In order to help facilitate these plans, eight tender companies have already been appointed to supply open source solutions. These are Choice Technologies, Impi Linux, GijimaAST, Obsidian, SourceCom, BCX, Novell and IBM.
oops ... watch how governmint spends 2-4 billion on OSS.

Sita is currently in the process of training 30 students with computer science diplomas to become LPI certified.
YAY! Then 100 next year, and 10 000 in 2010. Damn. A workforce of 10 130. Better be one of the first 30 if you want management positions.

I've been switching my clients over to openoffice/firefox for years now.

basically if the company does not deal with partners who use complex macro's, or they require a feature that is unique to M$.

The mail problem is all the old documents. It costs productivity to switch, but after a year or so, you save R1500-R2500 per PC you need to buy.

MS broadsided this one quite awhile ago...

I seem to remember they threatened the big municipalities with large lawsuits for pirated software (which they all had) unless they paid an up front fee and agreed to be on MS software for a set amount of time...

I reckon MS just need to get a few key departments tied down, and the rest of the guavamint will have almost no choice but to stay with MS software.
