SA plans to buy biggest fuel refinery from BP and Shell — Report

South Africa is considering buying the country’s biggest oil refinery, a joint venture between Royal Dutch Shell Plc and BP Plc, known as Sapref.

The state-owned Central Energy Fund, which manages the country’s energy assets, is looking at acquiring the 180,000-barrel-a-day plant, which is located on the coast near Durban, according to two people familiar with the information.

Y'all know what's coming.. fuel-shedding!

Only certain areas will be allowed to fill up on certain days, as their processing capacity will fall from 180k to 120k and then soon under 100k.
They'll show us grand graphs and twitter posts about emergency this and emergency that, maybe even have an fuel-shedding app called TheANCseMA named after their ineptitude.
This is the same guava mint that bought Eskom, the most respected energy company in Africa, to its knees.
This is not conjecture, you know this is exactly the way its going to unfold.

This is so childish. The sums were done. It will require massive investments to retool so that the plant can refine to modern standards. Are they going to ask China for more money? Or they going to take it from the Government wekkers via an Iqbal move from the PIC?

Any will they meet the requirements enforced on Shell/BP or will it be irrelevant seeing as the anc falls outside all laws in SA.

As mentioned a new cashcow on the horizon, one that the anc can fvck up and blame the colonialists for when fvcked.

Please dont, unless they plan to use it for scrap metal.

Whats the need for refining really, especially after they sold all our fuel reserves for far below cost. They said it wasnt needed. So why now have a refinery?

On the flip side, the Cape Town refinery will be up and running far greener than before from next year. Its just be announced. So Cape Townians will have fuel, so no real worries.

This is all about securing the couple of voters who lost their jobs at these plants.

The moment the next election is over this wreck of an idea will just silently rot away as yet another failed government project.

I am also wondering why the government needs to buy the decommissioned refineries. Surely they can just dig deep into those Expropriation without compensation pocket and just take it if they deem it important. pfffft.

The next election is 3 years away?

Shell and BP don't want to pay for clean fuel tax.
