The Department for Public Works reportedly supplied the data. It is responsible for the upkeep of homes in the country’s parliamentary villages.

Looks like it is responsible for much more than the upkeep of the homes because beds are not part of the upkeep, do they stop at beds or do they buy the whole furniture?

Only fair. Not a bad amount either, considering a single decent modern exclusive designer bed would cost you around that amount. Also, these guys needs a good night's rest knowing they are in charge of a failed state.

Just a comment for the writers, in these sort of articles, in order to illustrate overspending, the number of beds and their size involved should also matters, maybe you can also add those numbers in similar articles next time, would be interesting to see how much they over paid per bed.

Isn't this a form of corruption and promoting corruption ?
Why can't average goods be bought ? What beds were they using at home?
The same goes for cars.... under R500k should suffice.
Shouldn't officials be charged for wasting taxpayers money ?

And we know no minister is going to sleep on a bed that was used by another minister, especially if they were from an opposing faction, so chances are that new beds must be bought with every reshuffle, one can only imagine how much we spent on beds during the Zuma Presidency.

But it is in the Ministerial handbook, how can it be corruption?

Do they still do that?
I had a domestic that did it.

Here is a pic of one from the City Press August 2018:
