As well as the fact that I appreciate the way the ministers stick by fellow South Africans and don't just go and hide in the corner and let them face the music themselves

LancelotSA: The point is that he didn't support Semenya with the things he said. It was deconstructive.

Well done. Your ability to use as many smilies as you are allowed to really adds to your argument... it is a little like a minister threatening world war 3 to get his point across.....

No, it's an attempt to show the range of emotions experienced by someone trying to debate a point with you. Don't equate the gravity of an emoticon to that of a public statement by a government representative. You're stretching... ;)

Anyways, it's way to early on a Saturday for this...

Being overly optimistic about ZA is just as bad as being overly pessimistic.

Ugh... rugby...

I'm holding out for the GP quali this afternoon - no Saffer chops in the public eye there. ;) Enjoy watching 30 grunts chase a ball (when are they going to figure out that balls are ROUND?) for 80 minutes. :D

No really, enjoy the ruggers... :)

/muses - that post looks like something posted by our resident German chop, Gomario. I'll cut down on the emoticons.... Dammit ... DAMMIT

/skulks off.

*ARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!*

/bangs head against wall, until the bleed becomes...

The action of support is noble, but the motivation for doing it and manner it was done, is idiotic.

/gives enigma an enema

Use it wisely... :D:p

Great to see someone sensible on here... it is obvious, as is usually the case with another of our "leaders" in PdV, that the media often blows things out of proportion as regards things that are said.

We need to recall that for the majority of the people we are referring to, English is not their first language. They make a flippant comment in passing and then the media jump on the bandwagon and make a big deal out of it.
Then why don't they just shut up and keep their mouth closed? That this would be the most prudent course of action was obviouse on the first day this whole thing surfaced.

Then of course you get those who perpetuate the stupidity of these sort of reports by perpetuating the myth that our leaders are "stupid". Of course they would though as this suits their agenda.

I'm sorry but if you're a government minister you don't have the luxury of just making flippant comments and then have someone justify it by claiming English isn't their first language. They have entire press, PR and protocol offices to deal with these sort of matters and if they can't get it right themselves then they should use them. If you make stupid statements its not surprising some will label you as stupid.

LancelotSA, do you agree that the SA government and the ASA were correct when they turned this into a racial issue?

Great direct question. Don't expect a direct answer.

I know I won't get one. I agree that some people are overwhelmingly negative and refuse to see anything positive when it comes to leaders in South Africa. Lancelot is the complete opposite and refuses to hold them liable for what they say when they are clearly making comments that are unacceptable in a civilized society.

We should hold our leaders accountable for their failures and acknowledge when they get something right.

ASA and the South African government have gotten it very, very wrong in this case. The correct response it to condemn any leaks, express support for Caster and then refuse to comment on the issue until the test results are in. It's that simple. Crying racism and babbling incoherantly on air about going to war will make you look stupid in the eyes of the international community.

If you think the ASA are in anyway looking out for Caster's best interests you just need to see the way they bungled the Oprah Winfrey opportunity for Caster because they wanted to monetise her for their own gain. They are dispicable and deserve to be called out for their behaviour.

Couldn't agree more. We expect everyone to be rational and hold balanced views but the same way there are people that express an unbalanced negative view, there are those too that express an unbalanced positive view. It is best to simply ignore and not feed them.

+1

Lancelot, I think you are trying so hard to be the voice of reason and trying to defend the other side of every argument that can be possibly construed as SA negative or afro-pessimistic that you have become what you despise - totally one-sided and blinded to the possibility that your own opinions may be wrong or open to different interpretations. I've noticed a growing trend (much like the ruling party) of attacking anyone daring to criticize the goverment, ANC or SA in general. As if apartheid will for the next 100 years exempt you from criticism - whether it be for mediocrity or just making a complete fool of yourself. Valid and justified criticism (and probably even if it is not) is a vital part of a healthy and flourishing democracy - and shouldn't always be relegated to the old "race-card" bin.

As an aside, don't know if has been posted before - this was quite amusing :) -

Julius Malema, please accept my apologies for not attending the welcoming event of our athletes returning from Berlin held at OR Tambo Airport.

As a white Afrikaans-speaking African, I work for myself and forget about the real important issues in life. You see, Mr Malema, I had several meetings to attend that day and I really need to work long hours to make ends meet in these recessionary times. One of the reasons why I have to work hard is that not only do I support my own family, I also support three other families. I have a part-time gardener and two domestic workers that share my household duties.

Your comments and displeasure at whites not attending these events (at OR Tambo) really struck the right chord. I called my family and held a long discussion with them. I also decided to reduce my workload and will in future be earning less, but will have more free time to attend welcoming events at our airports and also perhaps participate in some marches.

Due to my new outlook on life, I have had to scale down my expenses. Regretfully, I had to reduce my commitments to my staff and decided to let Elsie go, one of my domestic workers, aged 54. I also decided to reduce the working time of my other domestic staff and cut their salaries by more than half.

In the past, my total salary bill to support the three families came to about R3 500 a month, about 15 percent of my monthly income. Now my outlay is down to R1 500 a month for these families and not only do I save money but I have free time to attend these events you mentioned.

I tried to explain to Elsie why she is no longer employed and why her three children will suffer. She is obviously upset as she has no other means to buy food or clothes for her family.

She also wanted to know if I will still provide her with free medicine, food and clothes from time to time. Obviously all this falls away as I have to be at OR Tambo when the Boks return from Australia, the cricketers return from their summer tour, Mr Zuma returns from Angola, etc.

I am also not sure why Elsie wanted to know where you stay. Perhaps you can publish your home address in the media as Elsie and her three children want to meet you. See you at the Airport.

10/10 for the psychiatric evaluation you just nailed.
