Good question. I can only imagine they're trying to keep the number of lefties having to face up to the likes of Ashwin and Jadeja down. From a form and figures perspective, there's no earthly reason why Vilas should be ahead of QdK. Maybe they also thought that QdK is still raw for the longer format of the game in subcontinental conditions (despite his phenomenal success in the ODI's).

EDIT: Not raw. Maybe still too prone to the rash shot as opposed to Vilas who might be a more 'stable' option in the middle order.

I'm truly at loss to understand.

Because QDK was dropped(based mostly on odi form...) for the second test in bangladesh. Test got rained out and they decided it would be unfair to drop villas as he didn't get a fair go...

QDK should be in the side as he shown form for the a side in india and the odi's in india. Also is a much keeper and batsman then villas. As the saying goes form is temporary but class is permanent.

Hopefully he is back in the side for the england series.

Imran's just as bad...the guy's never going to be a good test bowler. He's too aggressive...doesn't play the long game (ambiguity intended). I think it's time someone else had a go on the rare occasions we play 2 spinners.

Was out for a year with an injury. In the squad here but tahir and harmer have been prefered.

Big miss by villas, qdk would have caught that...

Elgar might not be a bad option here. A left arm tweaker to two right handers. Should give him an over or two. And he bowls less bad balls than Tahir or Harmer...

Playing two off spinner is no good, Maybe Leie (leg spinner) + Harmer or Piedt if we play two spinners.

Agree re variety. We actually have variety on the park right now with our off-spinners without Tahir bowling...Harmer can turn it into the right hander while Duminy \ Elgar can turn it away. We can make life difficult for right or left hand batsmen without the four balls Imran throws in too often.

Yes I think the same too, only Duminy is a right hand off spin bowler same like Harmer
