The reasons for Vilas as opposed to QDK, I seem to recall, were reasonable. Hindsight being a perfect science and all, there was no way of knowing this batting line up would struggle to reach triple figures cumulatively. There was no way to know that he would be so woefully short of runs.

Besides, if the top order had performed, then none of us would be looking at his performance. The argument is that he's a wicket-keeper and not a specialist batsmen.

No it was never reasonable to drop him from the test team, dropping him from the odi team would have been justified. He was dropped based on odi form from the test side because he got 1 duck in test cricket.

The modern wicket keeper needs to be able to contribute with the bat as well. also for the record QDK kept much better on the tour to sri lanka then what villas has done here, his keeping is better as well as batting. This was just some of punishment to try and send a message to qdk same thing happened to boucher in his career.

I think they would their batters a chance to come out and bat for a couple sessions with some freedom...it's the only facet of the game that hasn't gone right for them this tour and they might want a chance to show people criticizing the pitches something. Basically, no pressure on them so giving their attack some time off and making SA bat again even later in the match is fine for them.

All moot if AB is still around at the end.
