I think we should give thanks that we live in SA - there is a greater possibility that at least we will be able to watch the 2010 World Cup (luckily not yet trademarked, so I cannot be sued for using it here) live or on TV. The TV signal will probably still be poor and all, but the poor sods living in the rest of the world - there is a possibility that they will be unable to watch the games on TV given that it is highly unlikely that any of the new undersea cables would have been laid by then offering the necessary capacity.
If we really want to irk the govt, just get the foreign media convinced that it will be unlikely SA will be able to broadcast the 2010 Worldcup live. But just give a more factual basis for this, such as the fact that the lead time for laying an international cable is probably over 12 months, and increasing over time (the Infraco cables will probably be laid in 2011 or later) , the DoC's lack of credibility in finalising anything on time (incl. sorting out Infraco's licence, EASSy & SEACOMs landing rights), etc. Target the economic papers - FT, WSJ & The Economist.
