If SAA can do it but Eskom not, doesn't that make the BEE's in SAA second class to the BEE's in Eskom?
Where's the equality in that?
Because you have a communist in charge of state owned enterprises. All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.

Actually quite a few are doing very well from what I've seen during my travels.

Ethiopia is booming (the difference between what I saw in 2012 and earlier this year is incredible.)
Tanzania is outpacing us and is a great place to visit (never felt unsafe anywhere.)

Those are just two more that I can add to @konfabs list from personal experience.
Yeah, I know first hand several on the continent that are growing at almost China-like pace. I was more commenting on two half examples and then he waffled off about South America for some reason.

So you comparing a country with merely 2m inhabitants to one with 57m. The problem i have is they not anywhere close to use vs raw GDP.. we talking 349Bn/2017 to 17.5Bn/2017. 2ndly resource economy, diamond reserves running out in the next 5-10yrs.. so yah, i'd not say they winning when their gini is only slightly better too.
So, what you mean is we need a massive population drop in SA? Mbeki did try...

Well, most economists agree that Eskom is around 70% overstaffed. If we reckon SAA has arguably been under less spotlight they're at least that bad, probably worse, so 20% off a 70-80% inflated headcount is pretty much farting against thunder, isn't it?
But for all practical purposes, can they afford to shed over 50% at a go without affecting quality of their service adversely?

The countries in Africa that are economically free are growing, peaceful economies.

Botswana for example, passed us in terms of gdp per capita around 2010. This is insane because at the time of independence in 1966 they only had about 12km of paved roads.

Same with Mauritius.

You can see this trend in South America too. The countries that are economically free, are prosperous.

Off topic, but how weird would it one day be for the following scenario:

"Well, I had enough of SA/ANC's crap - I'm emigrating."

"Yeah, go and run you chciken to NZ/AUS/CAN/EU, Africa ain't for sissies!"

"Er... I'm emigrating to Botswana, better life quality and economical advantages - just got my PR Visa last month".

That is why I used GDP per capita.

Unlike SA, their leadership is well aware of the problem and are diversifying the economy.

I wouldn't be surprised if SA businesses start moving there when the ANC really starts making life difficult here.

I would think so. If three people are hired to do one person's job, and you let two of them go, you should be just peachy.

You are joking right?
I was asking a question. My point being that retrenchments can be done in phases, until they get rid of the required numbers (50%? 70%?) and not all in one go. It will allow for smooth transition. Maybe not possible in this case

I don't care about your metrics.
Quality of life is what counts.

Govt should have sold this airline ages ago. Unfortunately it would have still led to retrenchments because Airline hiring policies usually differ from SAA's "hire-a-family-member".

Netwerk24 reports that according to Deon Fredericks, the acting CFO of the SAA , R700 million will be saved through this restructuring. That is 994 jobs equals R700 million per year - average salary then equals R704 225 per year.

That is quite a lot for sucking oxygen out of thin air.

If I were one of the staff to be retrenched, I would be pissed as the ONLY reason why I am losing my job is because others stole and looted. Now I am being forced to pay for it.

At the same time surely you should have seen the writing on the wall for YEARS already and it’s only the blissful ignorance that keeps you there?

Edit - I see other reports say 944 jobs - maybe a typo in that article. If so the average salary then equates to R741 525.

Your last sentence smacks of blissful ignorance. Not everybody is fortunate enough to find alternative employment.
