Since 1994 the government has given SAA more than R57,000,000,000 in bailouts. Now is the time to stop this madness

In the past government has indicated that they cannot liquidate SAA because of all the liabilities it would immediately incur (bonds immediately mature, guarantees for debt, lease agreements terminated, etc.).
Some estimate it could be up to R40 billion.

However government are quite happy to throw R69 billion per year in Eskom's direction so I see no valid reason why the fiscus can't take a once off hit to get rid of the problem permanently.
A little bit of pain now and a lot less later.
Shut it down!

Yah but then it’s R450+B and an actual concern vs distribution of power which has impact on lives of SA citizens. Even if everything works out.. I don’t see them ever selling off distribution & transmission parts of business as it puts development agenda at risk.

Generation on the other hand.. that’s just theft which is why they should privatize it.

Fortunately only around R9bn is guaranteed by the government. The rest can be settled at a couple of cents to the rand via liquidation.
