SABC Bill scrapping "death knell" for public broadcaster — Parliament committee chair

The chairperson of Parliament's portfolio committee on communications, Khusela Diko, has slammed the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies' reported decision to withdraw the SABC Bill.

In a statement on 10 November 2024, Diko noted the development with "grave concern" and said the committee had not yet been formally notified of the proposed legislation's withdrawal, in accordance with the National Assembly's rules.

With a surname like Diko, i would refrain from making any sort of statements

As far as I'm concerned the SABC was dead the moment I heard they're paying many rondo actors tens of millions of Rands per contract, for crappy series, sitcoms and shows. As if they're superstars raking in even more for the company, as if for super profitable productions.

News flash. The SABC was running at a loss for years. There's nothing profitable on SABC. Mostly because of crap like that.

Reality of course. They were trying to manufacture some kind of star ecosystem. But it's just not how such things develop organically. And the golden age of television is over in any case.

If the ANC has a duty to provide information through the SABC then that's the governments problem not the consumer, The government must pay for it out of it's own pocket. On could successfully argue that charging a license fee of any sort inhibits access to it's platform, it does not make access any easier for the vast majority of the country who can't even afford the TV license fee. Not that we should be paying for things the ANC promised would be free, Not our fault the ANC's word isn't worth the breath wasted giving it.
