Had the billions not been blown on overpriced sports rights then they would have been blown on overpriced local scripted content or some other commercially unviable venture.

The current populist SABC policies mandate that it overpays for content with little or no regard for returns. It is just another failed experiment in socialist political engineering the losses for which are funded by taxes.

It could only be turned around by trying to follow a commercially viable model. But that completely goes against its socialist politically engineered aims.

It is symptomatic of everything wrong with the state. The state will continue to blindly follow these policies in all spheres as their core charter is based on financially unviable outdated policies which have been proven to fail in every failed state.

Investigating boards of government departments and SOE's for mismanagement is insane since the losses are all a direct result of central government policy.

How does a state mandate failure and then have the gall to launch an investigation when the entity which is guaranteed to fail then fails. These audits, investigations and so forth remain a complete charade until central government adopts policies based on merit and capitalist fundamentals.

Yes, beyond unlikely. Only complete economic collapse could sway them - and then only under mandated reforms imposed by the lender.

Multichoice gets some blame for inflating the price though
SA football seems to be of little interest to advertisers or to fans. If I come across an SA football match on TV, the absence of crowds is noticeable in most cases. So where will the income come from? Who wants the product?

It could be worse - like the BBC. 10 times the licence fee. Grossly overpaid 'presenters' and 'artistes'.
