DStv exclusive rights on big soccer final — SABC furious

The SABC has lashed out at communications regulator Icasa for failing to ensure that it can broadcast the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League Final between Kaizer Chiefs and Egypt's Al Ahly.

On Friday, the public broadcaster said it was disappointed to learn that SuperSport had secured the exclusive broadcasting rights to broadcast the match.

“The agreement between CAF and SuperSport is wrong as it places this showpiece of African club football behind a pay-wall, effectively denying millions of South African football fans the opportunity to watch the game.”

Indeed, so many people acquired new tvs for this game and it's not like you can loot a DSTV subscription.

Update – SABC will broadcast match

Following engagements between communications minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, the SABC, and MultiChoice, the match will now also be broadcast live by the public broadcaster on its television and radio platforms.

Well that was quick.

"behind a pay-wall, effectively denying millions of South African football fans the opportunity to watch the game."

Wait.. isn't the whole TV license a giant paywall too?

I wondered why the SABC 1 and 2 channels had their EPG in such a mess. Now it makes sense!

Supersport can take a running jump into nowhere!

Its called capitalism
When you can afford to pay for something you buy it.
Unlike the SABC wanting DSTV to collect the license fees their behalf.
The SABC is almost irrelevant these days.
I say good for MULTICHOICE in showing them a middle finger in more ways than one.

If you think the riots were bad before....

Stella got off her behind (maybe kicked on it) and did something

You so missed the update that's over an hour old, SABC will be broadcasting it, You are more SABC than you think.

Is SABC now claiming that SABC is a free-to-air service ?

Oh ok then, no more TV licenses boys and girls... Finally!!

SABC went crying to their auntie and got what they wanted, how adorable.

I hope stella offers this personal service to all enterprise in sa. Otherwise it sounds a lot like state is meddling in private enterprise.

“Even though Kaizer Chiefs has a huge fan base in South Africa, it is not considered a Senior National Team,” the regulator added.

Modimoeng said that Icasa’s door was always open to engagement with the SABC.
If the SABC had not gotten free to air broadcasting rights, I wonder if the SABC would have resorted to accusing Modimoeng of being a Pirates fan.

Always at least two sides to any story.

Why did they go crying to Icasa though? Like a petulant child...
I don't get it, did Multichoice just indulge them to avoid any protracted row? Why this particular event what about all the other major sporting events for which MC has exclusive broadcast rights.

I wonder how many of those watching this on sabc are actual licence holders

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA......
"SABC furious"
Maybe they shouldn't run their organization as a private piggy bank.
Then they will have money for big events.
