Payola: A bribe given to secure special treatment, especially to a disc jockey to promote a commercial product – Collins English Dictionary.

The term was coined in the 1960s when the US music industry was rocked by a scandal after DJs demanded that record companies and artists pay bribes to have their music played on air.

The practice was banned and some prominent US DJs lost their jobs when newspapers uncovered the scandal.
Aaah yes... I can just hear the "media's bias against the SABC" excuses already
