The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) paid Leadership magazine about R123 000 for a cover story featuring its chief executive, Dali Mpofu, in the June issue, according to Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri.

In a written reply to a question in the National Assembly by Ryan Coetzee of the Democratic Alliance, Matsepe-Casaburri said the money came out of the SABC's corporate marketing and public, international and regulatory affairs budgets.

Authorisation came from Phumelele Ntombela-Nzimande, group executive for public, international and regulatory affairs.

Haha, a great way to spend those TV licence fees!
For example, I've been watching DSTV since it came out, MNET
before that. I rent/buy DVDs from abroad and locally. I never watch
SABC drivel. Yet I have to pay a TV licence, so that these idiots
can show off their capo. How cool is that? :)

Matsepe-Casaburri said the magazine had approached the SABC to do a profile on the new corporate strategy and Mpofu as chief executive.

A decision was taken to accept the offer of the magazine, as it was one of many methods that the SABC had identified as a vehicle to bring corporate strategy and vision of the SABC to the public, she said.

This is just such unutterable drivel. The "corporate strategy and vision of the SABC" is merely to spawn propaganda for the ruling party, so cut the bull Ivy!

Don't really rate Leadership mag much, can't believe they paid so much for it but not surprised as SABC has become a mouthpiece for govt ... but then I think that has always been its tradtional unofficial role.

If government wants to have a propaganda ministry then good for them, just don't know why the rest of us should have to pay for it and even be told "its the right thing to do"

I read this in the Cape Argus yesterday. The last paragraph said the the DP was approached by various mags under the same circumstances, but she has declined all offers. Good for her. ;)

Why would they pay so much for a mag story that hardly anyone reads? The cover looked like something nice to include in a CV for himself.

The magazine should also be taken to task - where is their credibility if they charge to have your mug on their front page - does it really then show leadership - or who has the fattest wallet

Magazines pay to put anyone's mug on their front pages.

yes kingmonty

The problem here is that they charged to have the pic on the cover, so now when I look at a magazine like leadership or time, I will be thinking does he deserve to be on the cover, or did he offer the highest bid to be on the cover

thats what i thought too.

if they want some angelina jolie on the cover, they pay angelina jolie ca$h.

here, the situation is reversed...they paid the magazine...very very odd.

jislaaik, kingmonty - feeling a bit under the weather - take a pill - the SABC paid the magazine to put a pic of Mpofu on the cover, this is not normal - AFAIK - and does serious credibility damage to the magazine

I understand that magazines fork out hobos of cash for front cover pics - that is accepted - but this is not the same

...wow, thats a lot of TV licence money.

Perhaps that should be apart of the TV license adverts "pay your license - our CEO needs his face splashed over magazine covers"
