"It's a serious situation and I don't think that our government actually appreciates the seriousness of that, (that is) the risks that are involved in having a public broadcaster that is overly dependent on commercial advertising," Mpofu added.

How can government not appreciate the risks when it is, for all effects, the controlling partner? Booh. F***ing. Hoo. Maybe this is an indication that we should dispense entirely with a (farcically) `independent public broadcaster'.

The results show that at present the funding mix is 77% commercial funding, 18% licence fees, only 2% government support and 3% funding from other sources. He challenged the government to come to the party.

Tsk, what bare-faced cheek, doesn't he know that govt. have their own parties to organise?:sick::p:D

Why does the "public broadcaster" make a profit?
Good question, I suppose it must be a result of charging high prices and not skimming enough out of the coffers, strangely enough the SABC is yet another guavamental monopoly as far as public broadcasters go.

Geee, how bizzare that ETV is 100% self funded, and FREE!
I'm glad to know that we pay for 18% of the 13th, 14th and 15th cheques that ALL SABC employees got.
I think that's blatent theft, but that's just me.

Perhaps the 13th, 14th and 15th cheques for ALL SABC employee's issued last year should now be repaid out of the board members healthy pockets.

In the 2007/2008 financial year R41million went to securing English Football rights if I remember correctly.

I attribute the decline in profits to more hands in the cookie jar:p

Typical of the morons running the place they will knee-jerk to tighten up on license fees instead of realising that quality content is what draws viewers and then of course advertisers.

How are they hoping to survive once "cable" TV gets going?

They will always survive - they get license fees whether they broadcast or not and whether anyone watches/listens to them or not ...

I am wondering if we can't find a loophole in the law that will allow us to have DSTV but not a tv license... maybe a denatured TV set or something along those lines...

As far as I know, PC TV cards do not require a TV license, and neither do computer monitors that happen to be able to accept a TV input feed...

On an inspection, a TV card can be used to force you to pay for their bonuses, as the general sweeping statement is that any device capable of receiving a tv signal requires a tv license.

The only way to stop this blatant robbery is to boycott it, but they saw that coming ages ago, and split us up so that we pay at different times so that a stop-paying boycott will be difficult to organise.

Difficult, but not impossible.

SIDE: I love the way that they are challenging governmint to pay for their propoganda .. LAMO

My understanding is that ANY device capable of receiving a broadcast television signal is eligible for a TV license. So that means buying a TV card for your PC unfortunately requires a TV license.

However, the line grays a bit when you buy a decoder and connect it via a digital or signal out cable to a display device like a monitor or projector. At no point in that setup do you have a device which can pick up a native TV signal.

But Im wondering if anyone has actually tried this.

Oh no, who's been helping poor ETV out for the last 15 or so years? Surely they can't have been overly dependent on commercial advertising? It's a serious risk, you know!!
