SABC+ subscriber numbers revealed

South Africa's public broadcaster says the number of registered users of its over-the-top (OTT) streaming service — SABC+ — has grown to over 600,000 a year after it took over the service.

The SABC inherited its video streaming platform from Telkom in mid-November 2022.
 
Who knew that if you put something worth watching on a streaming platform the numbers will be massive. Mind blown....

Here is more advice for SABC. Start adding series and movies, buy the rights and make even more money on targeted ads. People are happy they get new fresh content for free. Brands are happy they are getting exposure and the SABC board is happy because they can go even bigger on irregular expenditure...

it says "registered users" though? So people have registered (given their info) to use the app and are not charged TV license?? FFS

You can sign up with garbage info and it will work. - Or rather it worked back then when I signed up.
 
Signed up as I couldn't watch via Openview.
Haven't touched it since the final though, but still registered.
In SABC(ANC) world that's probably still a win.

Clicking an extra button or two to make it work on a tv may seem trivial for someone who is 'technologically savvy' but if I look at my own parents they can hardly change the channel on their decoder or switch to a different hdmi input on their tv. If there is to be any major uptake the obstacles will have to be removed and something would have to be simplified to the point where it requires no thinking. Sometimes I wonder how we survived to adulthood... :)

Unlikely. Most sign ups were as a result of DSTV/SABC c*ntiness regarding broadcasting of the RWC and CWC.
Their only hope for more viewership will be similar deals/partnerships in future.
