South Africans in danger of losing access to SABC

If South Africa follows through with the 31 March analogue switch-off deadline, a date being challenged in court today, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) risks losing a quarter of its viewership at the end of the month.

This is according to SABC CEO Nomsa Chabeli, who says that this would mean losing out on much-needed revenue as the state broadcaster continues to struggle financially.

BEST NEWS EVER.

Shut the analogue frequencies down already - the frequencies were sold to Telkom/MTN/VodaCom/Cell-C

Shut SABC propaganda machine down already or sell it to private business like e-TV or DSTV.
We don't watch SABC and in this case I believe in user-pays principle - why must taxpayers keep bailing SABC out?

Easiest would be to place a broadcast message on the screen to tell people to go fetch their STBs at their nearest Post Office (or where ever), and then switch it off completely 2 days later.
They have for 15 years... But as usual you're talking about the lazy South African.

When they switch it off, a lot of no care neverminds, will wake up, and do the required to get their TV's working again.
Expect a spike in break-ins and TV theft.

A month later a correction will have taken place, and the SABC will have their viewers back.

Yes, I agree, switch it off. That'll make me pay for something I don't want.

31st March, which decade?

Important to stick proper dates in there.

What's the bet they get a couple extra months/year to sort out the Set top boxes once again
1000%

ITU deadline was 2015, and we missed that by a good decade and counting, and the original cutoff date was 11 Nov 2011, which we're way past...

- note only goes up to the MISSED 2023, we have a few more MISSED deadlines after those dates too.
