SABC is "entitled" to collect fees for any device that can receive a Broadcast signal.
Whatever else you use your hardware for has nothing to do with the SABC.

" allowing the public broadcaster to collect licence fees from non-TV users" so kinda like having to get a drivers license to take a taxi to work?

How is SABC justified in thinking this though? They're not involved in any way in the Netflix supply chain. From the media transport mechanism to the device it's delivered on. They are just another failing, flailing, embarrassment of a SOE that can't actually make money in a fair and above-board way. They have failed, from the top down. People will never agree to this BS. I do however think that Netflix needs to pay ZA tax for their service, since they are using our population to make money.

Why? Online service don't rely on Sentech spectrum and signal distribution. This is like asking cellphone, internet users, landline users, etc to pay a license fee.

Every time there is a brain fart by anything run by the ANC I seem to only manage reading the first paragraph before my brain protests.

1x Regulation stating that Netflix needs to collect it on their behalf and pay it over. If you read the article it would be quite apparent.
I read it. What if I only use Netflix on my phone? A court will laugh at this retarded guavamint should their proposal get challenged.

In a presentation to Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Communications presented by Deputy Communications Minister Pinky Kekana, the public broadcaster has argued the expanded definition of a TV licence is outdated and needs to be adjusted to current realities.
I watch Netflix on a monitor not a TV, there is no tuna fish in my monitor.

I don't have a decoder attached to my monitor, and so I don't watch SABC.

Take your Pinky and go finger your Kekana somewhere else.

Dont forget a Radio licence.

Pretty sure radio is already included in the TV license or something. I recall an advert years ago saying that if you listen to "blah blah blah" radio stations you are benefitting from the SABC or something like that.
Unless you're talking about private broadcast radios and the like, where they already regulate and tax the owners and operators AFAIK.
