What's next? YouTube, Spotify, Play Store, the AppStore?

Seems the gravy is running dangerously low
Exactly - there is no reason to include Netflix and not include Youtube... Multichoice (not the streaming variant though) might make sense - they carry SABC content (But most people use TVs to watch it, so they should already have a TV license anyway) (It should work on a computer screen with HDMI as well though)

I read it. What if I only use Netflix on my phone? A court will laugh at this retarded guavamint should their proposal get challenged.

I'm surprised they haven't yet tried to enforce license collection via multichoice and simply expand the definition to include any device capable of receiving any broadcast signal - that would be more than enough to sort out their "non-compliance" without going after Netflix and co.

That is the definition. Any device capable of receiving those signals.
Fun fact, if you remove the receiver from your TV you don't have to pay for a TV license.

Everyone has a smartphone today on which we can watch Netflix.
Why not force us to apply for TV license if we get a smartphone?

Everyone will go back to those old Nokia phones just so that we don't get harassed by the SABC.

SABC just mad because Hlaudi ruined them by selling off their archive to Multichoice.
Now they are just beggars asking government for handouts..

Ridiculous. If SABC can't support itself, sell it, or shut it down.

This is going into crazy territory.... why not then get Samsung to collect the TV license? This would also imply that part of the fee goes to providers like Netflix, Amazon, Lbry.tv, and others? SABC has absolutely zero to do with Netflix in any way or form. It's actually SABC that must wake up and get modern with what it does and compete. Yes TV is actually outdated and SABC belongs to that outdated era. The entertainment business and geoblocking is also part of that whole painful experience. Why is SA not exporting movies, shows and series to the rest of the world via streaming for subscription fees? What if SABC had created Netflix.....
