If there is one thing I would like the SABC do better is to introduce newer local content.

Does failure in paying your TV license have an effect on your credit score? I experimented with not paying the license fees this year; after 2 months from the due date, I got emails from their debt collector to pay... The credit score didn't take a knock from this (I was expecting to see SABC - Account in arrears). But then again, credit reporting agencies like ClearScore and Transunion probably have different ways, scales and metrics used in calculating the overall score.

SABC wants stricter TV Licence laws

The SABC wants stricter legislation around TV Licences to help improve compliance amongst South Africans.
As others have said, basically they want to force everyone to watch crap programming and still make money out of us all. This since bad management, BEE recruitment, bad programming, hands dipping into the coffers etc have made the SABC basically bankrupt.

There is no ways they would police this in the townships and squatter camps, let's face it, so guess who will get fined? And sending them the form to declare one no longer has a TV isn't even good enough now. I am being chased for a fee for this year despite having sent the form in to them the year before stating, along with affidavit etc, that the TV blew up and was taken to the dump. I am a pensioner and have no money to buy another TV and frankly, what is the point when we are forced to watch all SA content, that consists of awful soapies and the like.

I have a friend who moved back to the UK 6 years ago who is still being chased by the SABC debt collectors for TV licence fees from since she left. It's farcical. Others I know who have died but the family are still being chased for the yearly fee despite death certificates being submitted. Did you know that they changed their requirements so that one is legally bound to resubmit a cancellation each and every year whether in the country, in a grave or a pot on someone's mantelpiece? Yup, you do. And on top of that, if they do come out to your house to check your premises for a receiver they will charge you R300 for the privilege.

Why new legislation? There's nothing wrong with the current legislation, it's simply not enforced. There's no reason to assume new legislation would be, unless the onus is placed on businesses which usually abide by the law. Why did the SABC get rid of inspectors that went around the townships and squatter camps? Oh wait...

She added that once the SABC does make headway into making a TV Licence mandatory for subscription services or decoder purchases, it will remain the SABC’s responsibility going forward to ensure consumers continue to pay their fees.
Why assume this will be the case? There's no logical reason for it.

TV license is a tax. Taxes don't affect your credit score.

A fool never knows he/she is one: the current law cannot be stricter TV>License. No grey areas.
They are the problem in managing compliance: their incompetence.
They through their conduct have slowly eroded peoples willingness to comply, this added to the simple fact of cost of revenue collection will be higher than revenue collected, unless there is great majority of willing compliance they have a mission impossible.
The majority ( +50%) of the citizens will not comply: available funds, and were taught to boycott payments to government / government will provide ....free only.
Of the remainder the more affluent/ educated have no interest in watching the supplied content hence no licence...tv used for other viewing.
I do not have a tv, do not want one either have not listened to a radio in years.

Harsher penalties will just kill the sale of TV sets as in the current climate the poor will not buy and those that can afford will look to monitors for streaming services only.....
Realistically Government's task was to regulate for peace and harmony for all it's citizens not be in Tv, airlines etc. but to regulate enviro damage, fair competition etc. ....

Can we choose which TV license to pay for? let's be democratic, I would willingly pay for a UK tv license for the content that is on the BBC.

SABC, you couldn't pay me to watch that rubbish...

Maybe this is part of the reason why TV License fees are seen as a joke and not taken seriously. If the credit score is not going to be affected, and people can still carry on with their lives, they can forget about collecting fees. Was really expecting my credit score to take a knock due to the TV license account being in arrears (their debt collectors sent an email).

I think we do need to bring in stricter TV license laws. The same people that believe people are dumb for having a TV license are the same ones that ask their friends to use their credentials when taking out a TV. Really would like to see more newer local content. eTV's local content is really enjoyable. SABC has that dead horse they been flogging called Generations :(.

How much does SABC pay for all this airtime here, or is it a promised share in all the riches from all the new fukked up schemes?

The best and cheapest way to get compliance: A searchable "Shame Page" the only way to be able to pretend you don't watch SABC programs is to be paid up, and not appear on the list.
The embarrassment of your friends knowing you watch this stuff....eish!
