Scrap TV licences — SABC wants a TV tax

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) wants TV licences scrapped in favour of a TV levy that every household must pay, News24 reported.

During public hearings for the draft SABC Bill, the broadcaster told the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies that it would like to see a household levy system replace TV licences.

With the ongoing stampede away from DSTV, this is not the revenue stream they think it is.

You guys know Germany has this model in place right?
Since 2013 all citizens have to pay. Regardless if they have a device or not to watch tv or listen to the radio. Currently their fee is 18 euros per house per month.

I can see where the SABC are coming from. The current model is outdated and doesn’t work. Germany ditched that model in 2013 for the same reasons.

If the tax happens we only pay for public broadcast items. Any profit or loss for commercial is sabc problem and not the tax payer

Correct. If this model means that the SABC does not get anymore bailouts then I am for it.

Was hat Deutschland damit zu tun?

I would happily pay too is the SA service was like the BBC. Alas its far from that and very little is worth watching. However. Bring us the Rugby and Cricket and Premier and Champions leagr and we will happily pay to get rid of DSTV at R1000pm.

So even R100pm is ok but then we want sport. Ah the olymoics too. But in 4k
