SABC will auction off properties to raise money

The SABC has announced that it will terminate the lease agreements for its non-core properties, effective 1 December 2020, before auctioning these properties.

These properties include residential properties which are currently being leased to SABC employees as well as other people.

Now why, how and when did they acquire these "non-core" assets in the first place?

Additionally, its attempts to downsize its workforce have been met with stoic resistance by employees and the wider South African public.
Bradley how did you measure the levels of wider South African public support?

Maybe they should setup a Spaza shop in the front of the building.

Why do they still even own these? Other SOEs have gotten rid of properties like these years ago. Properties that were built or bought by the previous administration to provide affordable housing to people working for them who couldn't afford market rates. The likes of Eskom, etc got rid of those. Eskom are even now monetizing their fancy conference and training centre in Midrand. Not sure it is still all that fancy.

I wonder if the SABC got around to selling that flat in London.

Why would they?

Surely its cheaper to house whichever executive is currently on a junket in London in the flat than in some hotel... :p

You know what would've been better? Getting rid of unneeded employees. I'd say about 400 would've done it.

We need to be specific here.. not just 400 employees... 400 unneeded managers/senior managers.
