Baghdad - Ousted dictator Saddam Hussein and two former members of his regime were hanged on Saturday, officials said, as Iraq braced itself nervously for possible reprisals by his remaining supporters.

"The execution of Saddam Hussein is complete," state television said in a text headline broadcast against a background of Qur'anic verses.

"Saddam Hussein was hanged until death ensued. A black page in the history of Iraq has been turned," it added in a second news flash, as joyful popular music filled the airwaves.

Mariam al-Rayis, an adviser to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki who attended the execution, said in an interview on state television news that the three men were hanged one after the other.

"It was between 05:30 and 06:30," she said. "The whole thing was filmed."

/me thinks Bush must be happy now.

Apparently they had to get it done quickly because they're entering some sort of holy Haji period now and couldn't do it during that time.

its already the Hajj period and for Sunni's they celebrate Eid today in Iraq and for the Shi'ites they celebrate Eid on Sunday.

Drat, I've just woken up and didn't proofread that (at all, nevermind properly). Back OT, the quotes page is worth reading; that mad wingnut is as self-serving as you'd expect him to be but at least some Western responses aren't.

The Iraq ordeal has cost the Yanks a fortune.
All their own doing of course.
Will the War Debt carry over into the markets? A Bull Run for 3 years on the Stock Markets. Can it continue or will we see a major correction.

If he had something incriminating against the Bush regime then surely he would have said it during his trial, esp. when he saw things werent going his way?

The trial was a farce. Hits on the lawyers, Saddam ordered not to speak. Don't get me wrong, he was a ****, and probably deserved what came to him.

Yeah thats pretty much the general opinion...now when is George Bush going on trial for his **** foreign policy and causing havoc where he has no business?
